About the Match
After a month of tussle, we have our finalists for the inaugural edition of Tamil Nadu Premier League. The team which finished at the top of the table after the league stage, Chepauk Super Gillies, will take on Thoothukudi Patriots, who is looking ever stronger with Dinesh Karthick and Abhinav Mukund in top form. Chepauk won the Coimbatore's challenge to make it to the final of this competition which will be played on 18th September at 6:30 PM at M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on a track which is generally slow and suited for spinners. Earlier, the Patriots extended their unbeaten run to four in the semifinal as they stopped Dindigul Dragons' run in the tournament. Who's going to prevail in the night of the final? Only time will tell! However, with stadium expected to be jam-packed with spectators pouring in to support their favorite sides, a thrilling contest is certainly on the cards.
Thoothukudi Patriots started off really slowly in the competition, but they managed to ramp up the pace when it really mattered. They sailed through to the semifinal by winning three out their last three games when they looked down at out after four games out of which they had only won one. Abhinav Mukund scored a brilliant 91 in the semifinal ably supported by skipper Dinesh Karthick. Their bowling has done really well with Lakshmipathy Balaji leading the attack. Washington Sundar picked up three wickets to stall Dragons' chase in semifinal. Aswin Crist has bowled remarkably well to put on brakes and pick wickets at the regular interval.
Their batting was a cause of concern with Gandhi as their only in-form player as Dinesh Karthick was out to play Duleep trophy and Mukund being injured at times. The issue has now been sorted, or at least it looked that way in the semifinal, with DK coming back and Mukund looking as fit as ever. No wonder that this team has a 4-match winning streak as they've played tremendously well over the past few days and will be looking to repeat it in the final as well.
Chepauk Super Gillies
Super Gillies floated in the middle of the table for the most part of the league stage but jumped to the top when it mattered the most. Just like patriots, they too seem to be peaking just at the right moment. Saravanan played extremely well in the semifinal who was well supported by Gopinath with cameos from R Sathish and Uthirasamy Sasidev pushed the score to 161. The bowlers made sure that the total was too steep to climb for LYCA Kovai Kings.
Skipper Rajagopal Sathish has been in fine form and has been hitting sixes at will in the slog overs. Sai Kishore has been a find of the tournament who bowled brilliantly in the semifinal too as he bagged two scalps for just 17 runs in his four overs. He along with R Alexander will be pretty handy in the spin-favorable conditions of M.A. Chidambaram Stadium. Yo Mahesh has been terrific with his experience along with Anthony Dhas who has bowled with pace and passion throughout the competition.
All in all, Super Gillies is a solid team with good players who can win games on their own. They've played eye-catching cricket throughout the tournament and they definitely have the talent and power to flourish in the night of the final.
Both the teams have worked really well to make it to the final; only one of these will get through. DK's return has made the Patriots' batting stronger whereas consistency has been a trademark of Super Gillies in this competition. Cricket is a game of certainty and T20 is even more so, but we think Chepauk Super Gillies will stun Thoothukudi Patriots to take win the title.
