The Trinbago Knight Riders would still be reeling from the shock defeat that they suffered at the hands of the Jamaica Tallawahs in the last match and now they have the prospect of facing a very decent St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots unit. The Patriots ended up losing their first match against the Guyana Amazon Warriors in a bit of an ill-tempered match and would be fired up for their upcoming games.
Both these sides are very strong, especially on the batting front, and this could be another very high scoring match.
There were many points in the last match when the Trinbago Knights could have been forgiven for thinking that the match was over and they were sure to win. They batted first and contributions from four of their top-5 helped them reach a total of 223 for 6.
This is not a target that is chased down easily especially with the likes of Narine and Bravo to help defend it.
Chris Lynn played an aggressive inning of 46, Colin Munro hit his second consecutive fifty in the competition, and Brendon McCullum provided the impetus at the end of the inning with a 27 ball 56 which at one point saw him on 7 runs off 12 balls.
The Trinbago Knight Riders then began their defense in style as Ali Khan picked up three top-order wickets in his first two overs. They had the Tallawahs at 16 for 4 and then 41 for 5 to almost certainly seal the match.
What followed by utter carnage as Andre Russell played one of the best T20 inning ever and hit a 40 ball century to lead his side to a miraculous victory. As a Knight Rider player, all you can do is doff your hat to the man and move on.
They do need to ask some hard questions of their bowling attack. Sunil Narine was ineffective and we are not sure him batting at the top of the order is helping his confidence either. Dwayne Bravo had one of his worst nights, and Fawad Ahmed was poor too.
Against the Patriots, the Knight Riders will need to improve their bowling performance because they also have some players capable of taking the game away from them in a blink. On the positive side, the Knight Riders would like to remember that they did most things right before coming up against a rampaging Andre Russell and that is not something that anyone can plan for.
Chris Lynn, SP Narine, Colin Munro, Brendon McCullum, Darren Bravo, Denesh Ramdin, Dwayne Bravo, Kevon Cooper, Fawad Ahmed, Ali Khan, Shannon Gabriel.
Chris Gayle started off CPL 2018 in excellent fashion with a superb inning of 86 but he did not get any support from his teammates. Gayle was present till the 19th over of the inning but the Patriots could still only manage 146 runs in total and that is very disturbing.
Evin Lewis, Tom Cooper, Ben Cutting, Anton Devcich, and Carlos Braithwaite make for a very strong batting lineup with plenty of power available. To have Collectively missed out like they did would have been disappointing for the Patriots and we expect them to come back stronger.
The St.Kitts and Nevis Patriots will know that they are up against the favorites this year and they are going to be tested in every department. The Knight Riders have an in-form batting side and will come hard at the bowling.
Can Cottrell, Lamichhanne, Braithwaite, Cutting, and Joseph raise their game to challenge the Knight Riders? We believe that they can. Lamichhane started the tournament very well and picked up two wickets for next to nothing.
Cutting is excellent at the death and Braithwaite is bowling much better in recent times as well. What the Patriots really need is for Joseph and Cottrell to have a good day. That allows them to get a couple of overs from Devicich and Cooper in the middle to give them some flexibility and adapt to how the Knight Riders are playing.
We like the look of this team and believe they have picked up some very good T20 players. They are can give the Knight Riders a run for their money if they can start well in the contest.
Chris Gayle, Evin Lewis, TLW Cooper, Ben Cutting, Mahmudullah, Carlos Brathwaite, Anton Devcich, DC Thomas, Sheldon Cottrell, Sandeep Lamichhane, Jeremiah Louis.
The team winning the toss is likely to bat first
Close to 450 runs were scored in Port of Spain in the last match that was played there. The pitch is excellent for batting and offers nothing to the bowlers. Change of pace or some mystery spin seems like the only thing that will challenge the batsmen.
The weather forecast for the match is pretty good with a clear day expected. The humidity will be high and come clouds around but we should have a full, uninterrupted match take place.
The Trinbago Knight Riders are the clear favorites for this match and that is understandable. They are playing at home and have an in-form batting side full of T20 superstars. The St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots though are not to be taken lightly. They have plenty of match winners themselves and we believe they are absolutely capable of pulling off an upset.
At the price being offered, a punt on the Patriots is recommended.
