About the Match
Red Steel defeated Tridents by a massive 72 runs to gain two more points; they remain at the bottom of the table and will be eager to improve their position by winning the next match against Patriots on 18th July at Port of Spain. Patriots on the other hand are at the 4th position with 8 points from 9 matches and this is their last chance to try and secure a place in the play-offs. Both teams have well-balanced sides with established batsmen and bowlers but the team that can keep a cool head above it shoulders will emerge victorious.
Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel
Batting first, Red Steel put up a massive total of 184, thanks to a thundering 80 off 44 by Darren Bravo; Dwayne played a useful knock while Kallis and Delport started the innings well. Defending 184, the bowlers kept the opposition under pressure and took the team to a huge victory by 72 runs. Dwayne Bravo picked up 3-16 while Davis and Badree took 2 wickets each; Kallis, Botha and Cooper picked up a wicket each at regular intervals to demolish the opponent for just 112 runs.
In the earlier match against Zouks, the batsmen had put up only 90 runs in 9 overs in a rain-curtailed match; the bowlers struggled to defend the total and lost the match by 4 wickets although Kallis picked up 3 wickets and Dwayne Bravo yet again provided the much needed breakthroughs by taking 2 wickets.
Their previous contest against Patriots had resulted in a 6-wicket victory after chasing down 147 runs successfully. They will try to repeat their tactics against the hard-hitting Patriots batsmen with the bowlers being in good form.
St. Kitts & Nevis Patriots
They had lost the match against Red Steel, the last time they faced each other, mainly due to a dismal performance by the top order batsmen; they lost wickets quickly and could muster only 146 runs, which the bowlers found difficult to defend. This time, they must use the resources at hand with a better strategy and try to post a big total if batting first or try to restrict the opponent to a modest total.
In the previous match against Zouks, the batsmen led by Guptill and Dowrich, who had posted 30+ runs each, put up a competitive total of 170 runs, which the bowlers had successfully defended. Brathwaite picked up 3 crucial wickets while Afridi tricked the opponents with his googlies and scalped two wickets that included the experienced Pietersen too. They won the match by a good margin of 26 runs to put them in a good position on the points table.
This being their last league match before the play-offs are decided, they must come out all guns blazing if they want to keep their hopes alive; with power packed batsmen and clever bowlers, we can expect this team to surge forward.
While Patriots have the pressure to make it to the next stage mounting on them, they do have the determination to do well having come so far in their first season of the league. Red Steel on the other hand, has the psychological advantage of having won the previous contest against the same opponent. Although they too are in a pressure situation to win this match, we feel that Red Steel will continue with their winning momentum and emerge victorious here
