Tasmania

Even though Tasmania lost their last game to South Australia, it ended incredibly closely with only 14 balls remaining. A few improvements here and there could have seen Tassie pick up the win.

There were great performances from Jake Doran (105 runs) and Jordan Silk (44), although where Tasmania lost the match is probably the poor totals from usually great batsmen like Ben McDermott (7) and Caleb Jewell (13). This is Tassie’s solid opening pair and it was surprising to see such low scores.

Of course, the bowling wasn’t much better, as despite Tom Rogers’ 3/44 (ER: 4.88), Tasmania did give up far too many runs from lacklustre bowling attacks. Riley Meredith ended with 1/59 from 10 overs (ER: 5.90), Nathan Ellis had 1/58 (ER: 6.00), and Tom Andrews finished with 1/56 (ER: 5.60). I

f Tasmania are going to win, it still needs to be from McDermott (52.88 batting average) and Jewell (45.00), who are undeniably the most potent pair on the Tassie squad. Meredith has been a decent bowler in the tournament so far and has 16 wickets in seven matches, so he’s still worthy of a spot.

Victoria

Victoria has lost two Marsh Cup games in a row and badly needs a victory against Tasmania to stay relevant in the tournament.

That said, Victoria very nearly pulled off a huge upset victory over the mighty Western Australia, so it’s evident how talented the side is when everyone is playing well.

Captain Peter Handscomb was as solid as ever with 30 runs, so too was Marcus Harris with 30, but the biggest shock came from Matthew Short’s 75 runs. Big scores from Short aren’t that common, as his previous best was 43, but it’s encouraging to see that it can be done. Plus, Marcus Harris is due for a giant run total soon.

The success or failure with the bat will still come down to Handscomb, however. He’s truly in form right now and his 281, not out, against WA in the Sheffield Shield was spectacular and led to a drawn match.

The team’s secret weapon is still offspinner Todd Murphy, who went 3/42 in 16 overs (ER: 2.62) during the recent Sheffield Shield clash against WA.
