TSC vs VAC Match Prediction - Oct 28, 2022

This upcoming Sheffield Shield matchup between Victoria and Tasmania is sure to be interesting, not least because the two states just played each other in the Marsh Cup, in which Victoria won by 17 runs.

Victoria is still searching for their first win of the current Sheffield Shield, while Tasmania has one victory. There isn’t much to go on, however, as every state has only played two matches so far.

TSC vs VAC Team Previews

Tasmania

Despite Tasmania losing to Victoria in the Marsh Cup, the state did win its last SS matchup against South Australia by seven wickets on the back of great batting performances from Tim Ward (82 and 60 runs) and Caleb Jewell (108 in second innings).

Ward and Jewell are two of the most reliable batsmen in the SS cricket and if Tasmania has any chance to win, it will always come down to one of the two putting up incredible figures. Ward’s 40.61 batting average and Jewell’s 38.41 are sure to be well known by the Victorian bowlers, who will look to dismiss these two ASAP.

Tasmania has many batsmen who can carry the load if Ward or Jewell doesn’t have a great match, particularly captain Jordan Silk and Ben McDermott. Having such a deadly top and middle order makes Tasmania a threat on any match day, so Victoria will have to be patient and likely absorb a lot of runs before a dismissal.

For the bowlers, the biggest hazard the Vics will face is undoubtedly fast bowler Peter Siddle. The big man has plenty of national side experience and has picked up an astonishing 28 wickets in eight matches, not to mention a great Economy Rate of 2.34.

Victoria must be careful whenever Siddle is bowling, as he’s far too crafty to be ignored!

Tasmania Playing 11

Ben McDermott, BJ Webster, Tim Ward, Caleb Jewell, Jackson Bird, Jake Doran, Jarrod Freeman, Jordan Silk, Peter Siddle, Riley Meredith, Tim Paine.

Victoria

Victoria always has an opportunity to win if captain Peter Handscomb is at the crease to bat. In 10 matches, Handscomb has 1,120 runs with an average of 70.00, thanks largely to his 281* against Western Australia. Handscomb’s talent can’t be denied and just having him in the squad gives the Vics a massive chance to win.

If Handscomb and Marcus Harris (who scored a great 111 against WA) can really dig in and pair up for a massive total of around 300 in each innings, then Victoria can easily win this SS match.

Fast bowler Scott Boland is the one to watch for Victoria, who also has some national side experience and is better for it. Boland is performing brilliantly right now and has 32 wickets in six matches for an ER of 2.10. Boland may well be called upon to remove some of Tasmania’s biggest batting threats like Jewell and Ward.

Victoria Playing 11

Ashley Chandrasinghe, Cameron McClure, Fergus O’Neill, Mitchell Perry, Marcus Harris, Matt Short, Nic Maddinson, Peter Handscomb, Scott Boland, Sam Harper, Travis Dean.

Pitch and Conditions

There’s plenty of bounce and spin at the Blundstone Arena, Hobart, but batters also have a great time here, so it’s very balanced. Tasmania may have a slight advantage by playing on their home pitch, but a small one.

TSC vs VAC Betting Tips

The last time these squads met in a SS match was 15th March 2022, which Victoria won in a close game by two wickets.

We think now’s the time for Victoria to show that they are a state capable of winning in any format. This potential Test match win over Tasmania would vault them to the upper section of the table in the Sheffield Shield.

If Handscomb and Harris can each hit centuries, and if Boland can trouble the top-order Tasmanian batters, then Victoria can pick up this victory.

Bet on Victoria to win.
