TSC vs WAC Match Prediction - Feb 20, 2023

Fifth-placed Tasmania will take on first-placed Western Australia in the Sheffield Shield.

Although WA started out hot with three wins in a row, they’ve since drawn one and lost one since then. Tasmania has been all over the place, with three draws, one win and one loss in their last five games.

TSC vs WAC Team Previews

Tasmania

It’s a bit hard to completely judge Tasmania’s recent Sheffield Shield efforts, as they only had one batting innings due to the game against NSW being abandoned because of rain. Still, it’s clear which players are vital to the squad.

It’s worth mentioning that power-hitter and wicketkeeper, Matthew Wade, will be absent from the squad yet again, as he was first playing in the SA20 league but has now signed up to play in Pakistan.

Tim Ward is usually a reliable batter and is incredibly young at 24 years of age, but we were slightly disappointed with his first innings score of just 12 runs. He can bounce back, but we need to see it ASAP. Jewell and Silk were also poor and each failed to score above 15 runs, but it was nice to see McDermott pick up 50 and the surprise of Webster with 75.

It may be that we don’t see fast bowler Jackson Bird in the side, but there’s enough great fast bowling from Peter Siddle and Nathan Ellis, who combined for four wickets in the drawn match with NSW. We do worry that it won’t be enough for a tough batting side like Western Australia.

Western Australia

WA must be shocked at themselves for losing to SA in the first Sheffield Shield match of 2023, but it wasn’t all bad. True, the first batting innings was a surprise at only scoring 162 runs, but the second was far better with 303.

Stoinis was the only real standout batter in the first innings with 56 from 68 deliveries, but he scored only 23 in the second and it was up to other batsmen to pick up the runs. Bancroft (80), Cartwright (50), Inglis (43), and Hardie (40) were much better, but it still wasn’t enough for a victory.

We do trust these WA batters, as there are so many great players in the squad. Despite guys like Marsh and Whiteman having bad batting games, they can play well in the next matchup and the 303 is a good sign for the future.

The WA bowlers did let down the team somewhat, as many had terrible stats. Rocchiccioli gave up 2/198 and Moody was even worse at 0/141. The biggest plus was fast bowler Matthew Kelly, who took 3/57 & 3/38. Kelly, along with Stobo and hopefully Behrendorff, should lead the team in bowling and make light work of Tasmania.

Pitch and Conditions

The Bellerive Oval is great for bowling early on with the new ball, but tends to shift to a batting wicket later in the match.

TSC vs WAC Betting Tips

Historically, Tasmania has played well against WA and won four out of the previous five games, however, the last match was way back in 2021. This Tassie line-up is good, but it seems unlikely it’s enough to defeat a powerhouse team like WA.

Western Australia did lose to SA, but you have to imagine that they’ll play much better in this matchup. Bancroft, Inglis, and Hardie are bound to bat really well, and even Whiteman could be important. If Behrendorff bowls, he’ll support an already great lineup of Stobo and Kelly. WA needs Rocchiccioli and Moody to improve, however.

The Mostbet odds aren’t as exciting for WA as they are for Tasmania, but we trust Western Australia to get this victory and be incredible with bat and ball.
