UPWW vs GGW Match Prediction - Mar 05, 2023

The UP Warriorz will begin their WPL campaign this Sunday as they take on the Gujarat Giants at the DY Patil Sports Academy in Mumbai.

As per most cricket betting sites, the Gujarat Giants are the favorites to win this contest. However, the Warriorz have picked up some versatile players during the auction and will be looking to put up a tough fight here.

UPWW vs GGW Team Previews

UP Warriorz Women

The Warriorz didn’t have the best of times at the auctions and the team prepared by them seems to be a bit lacking when compared to other franchises. While they have managed to get some of the best international players in white-ball cricket, the Warriorz haven’t invested much in good local players.

The batting department looks especially lacking as Australian wicketkeeper-batter Alyssa Healy and all-rounder Tahlia McGrath are the only big names here. Healy is the top-ranked batter in WODIs, while McGrath holds the top spot in WT20s. However, the duo is the only recognized big hitter in the squad. There are no quality batters especially at the top of the order, who can give them a good start.

They will have to depend on the likes of Kiran Navgire and Simran Shaikh, both of whom are yet to prove themselves on the big stage. The only quality Indian player here is Deepti Sharma, who can play the role of a finisher and can also pick some quick wickets during the middle overs.

Sophie Ecclestone, who is the number 1 spinner in WT20s according to the latest ICC rankings, is one of the biggest buys for the Warriorz this season as the left-arm spinner will be quite effective on the slow turning pitches at Mumbai.

South African veteran Shabnim Ismail is likely to get the new ball duties along with Anjali Sarvani.

Gujarat Giants Women

The Gujarat Giants are off to a terrible start as they lost their opening fixture against the Mumbai Indians Women by a huge margin of 143 runs.

Opting to bowl first, the Giants were put under the pump right from the word go by a strong Mumbai batting line-up. Despite having some excellent bowlers in the team, including Ashleigh Gardner, Georgia Wareham, and Annabel Sutherland, the Giants’ bowlers were hit all around the park as Mumbai posted a mammoth total of 207-5.

The chase began on a sour note for the Gujarat Giants as captain and the team’s most reliable batter, Beth Mooney had to retire hurt in the very first over as she appeared to twist her leg. Things went rapidly downhill thereafter as they lost wickets at a rapid pace.

D Hemalatha and Monica Patel were the only two batters who managed to reach double figures and as wickets continued to tumble around them, the whole team was back in the dressing room in the 16th over, with just 64 runs on the board.

The Giants have some excellent batters in the middle order, including Harleen Deol, Ashleigh Gardner, and Annabel Sutherland, and they will need to play an important role in this game. As displayed in the last match, the bowling is an Achilles heel for the Gujarat Giants as they lack quality seamers.

Pitch and Conditions

The DY Patil Sports Academy has a flat pitch and is a batting paradise. The bounce is consistent throughout the match, making it easy for the batters to play some big shots. The outfield too is quite fast and we should see plenty of boundaries. While the quicker bowlers have traditionally struggled here, the spin bowlers can extract some spin by hitting the footmarks.

The average first-inning score here is around 160-170. The weather is expected to remain clear with temperatures ranging from 30-33 degrees Celsius.

UPWW vs GGW Betting Tips

While the Gujarat Giants were completely outplayed in their opening match, they have a good chance of making a comeback here as they face a relatively weaker opponent on Sunday. The Giants have a stronger batting line-up compared to the Warriorz and also have some capable all-rounders in the squad, who can play important roles with the bat as well as the ball.

Bet on the Gujarat Giants to win.

While Sneh Rana made her T20 debut back in 2014, she hasn’t got many chances on the international stage. However, whenever she has played, she has been pretty effective with her off-breaks. In her 25 appearances, she has picked up 24 wickets and had been pretty economical too, giving away just 6.21 runs per over. She was the top bowler for the Giants in the last match and we expect her to put up a similar performance on Sunday.

Alyssa Healy is a towering name when it comes to white-ball cricket. In her 123 T20 innings, she has scored a total of 2489 runs, including a century and 14 half-centuries. She has a good record while playing in India and with the pitch in Mumbai being easy for stroke-playing, we are backing her to be the top scorer for her team.

Sophie Ecclestone is the top-ranked bowler in WT20 internationals according to the latest ICC rankings. She has picked up 97 wickets in 70 T20 matches and is likely to be quite effective on the spinner-friendly wicket in Navi Mumbai.
