We are down to the final few matches in the ongoing Global T20 Canada the road to the playoffs is still wide open. Barring a couple of sides, all the teams are still in contention for the playoffs and are set to tussle hard in the upcoming matches. Vancouver Knights, the defending champions of the tournament, haven't done as poorly as the points table suggest and are still in the hunt for the playoffs. They have been on the receiving end of luck and will need to fare a lot better in their remaining two fixtures. Up against them in their next game will be Edmonton Royals who haven't been able to finish first in any of their matches yet. On paper, this certainly appears to be a mismatch, but such is the nature of the format and the game that nothing is guaranteed.
Vancouver Knights would consider themselves extremely unlucky after having to walk away with just one point in their kitty despite scoring a record-breaking total batting first in their last match. As the match was abandoned due to rain and there was nothing they could have done, we expect them to take the same team as the last match's into the next match.
They completely justify the tag of defending champions and the favorites with the way they play in the middle. They have an opening pair that is authoritative and can tear apart any bowling unit in the world. Chris Gayle showcased that in their previous match where he smashed a brutal hundred and helped Knights rack up a towering total.
With the likes of Chadwick Walton, Shoaib Malik, and Rassie van der Dussen available in their middle-order, they have an excellent amalgamation of youth and experience at their disposal. While their batting looks rock-solid and explosive at the same time, they certainly have a few chinks in their armor, as far as the bowling is concerned.
Their bowlers were taken apart in their last completed fixture as Winnipeg Hawks overhauled their over-200 total with remarkable ease. They have plenty of inexperience in their bowling unit and the likes of Ali Khan, Smit, and Saad bin Zafar will have to step up in the upcoming fixture to keep Edmonton Royals in check.
Chris Gayle, Shoaib Malik, Andre Russell, CAK Walton, Daniel Sams, Hayden Walsh, Tobias Visee, MJ Rippon, Ali Khan, Saad Bin Zafar, Rayyan Pathan.
Despite having a pretty solid batting unit on paper, its been pretty surprising to see Edmonton Royals collapse more often than not in the tournament so far. They have plenty of experience in their batting unit with the likes of Faf du Plessis, Jimmy Neesham, Richie Berrington, and Anshuman Rath available at their disposal.
In addition to that, they bat pretty deep with the likes of Mohammad Nawaz and Ben Cutting available, but frequent collapses in their batting have hurt them big time. Barring Faf du Plessis, who scored 55 of 20 deliveries in their last match, none of their batsmen have appeared to be settled at the crease and have perished in a quest to score too much too quickly.
Thier bowling lineup, however, has done pretty well so far, but with batting unable to do anything of substance in the tournament up until now, their bowlers have had too much to do. Even in their last match, their bowlers tried valiantly to restrict Montreal Tigers, but defending a total of less than 160 on a beauty of a batting wicket and a ground with small boundaries was next to impossible, but it was commendable to see their bowlers make a match out of it.
Mohammad Hafeez, Ben Cutting, Shadab Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, James Neesham, Safyaan Sharif, Anshuman Rath, Richie Berrington, Kyle Fitzroy Phill, Navneet Dhaliwal, Satsimranjit Dhindsa.
Even if Edmonton Royals end up winning all of their remaining two fixtures, the probability of their qualification is only mathematical. Vancouver Knights, on the other hand, have all to play for, as another couple of wins in their next couple of fixtures should be enough to take them through. Also, they have a supreme batting lineup consisting of Rassie van der Dussen and Chris Gayle that can wreak any bowling attack on its day. While bowling has been a bit of an issue for the Knights, we think that their bowlers should be able to do alright against the Royals' underperforming batting lineup. Therefore, it would be safe to place your money on Vancouver Knights to win the upcoming encounter.
