Karaikudi Kaalai survived a close scare from Ruby Trichy Warriors as they got out with two crucial points after sneaked out after prevailing in super-over in a high scoring encounter. VB Kanchi Veerans, however, was not so lucky in their match and lost to Lyca Kovai Kings by a massive margin of eight wickets. The two teams are now set to lock horns, in a bid to get two critical points, at NPR College Ground, Natham, Dindigul on Wednesday, 24th July. It's just the beginning of the tournament, and while there are a lot of matches to play in the competition after this one, each point can be of significant importance in crunch situations. With both teams likely to strive hard for a win in the upcoming matches, albeit for different reasons, a cracker of a contest is certainly on the cards.
VB Kanchi Veerans exhibited a dismal performance in all three departments of the game in their first encounter of the Tamil Nadu Premier League as they lost the match by eight wickets and more than four overs to spare, hurting their net run-rate in the process. Considering that there was hardly anything positive to take away from that game, they have plenty to ponder upon.
Batting first on a beauty of a batting wicket, Kanchi Warriors were dealt with a couple of early blows as they lost both their openers within the first seven balls of the match. Baba Aparajith and Suresh Lokeshwar got them back into contention with a solid 61-runs partnership; they missed the lack of power-hitting at regular intervals. They eventually ended up with just 150 runs on the board which the Kovai Kings chased down with considerable ease.
Had they picked up early wickets, they could have made a match out of it, but such indisciplined was their bowling which was coupled by immaculate batting by Shahrukh Khan and Abhinav Mukund, that they weren't left with a chance after the powerplay overs. They conceded 84 runs in the first 6.4 overs before Rangaraj Suthesh got rid of Shahrukh Khan. He got another one quickly in the form of Pradosh Ranjan Paul, but the damage in the early overs was too significant to mitigate. Going into their second match, they have a hill to climb, and if they improve their bowling and batting, the Karaikudi Kaalai would undoubtedly have their work cut out.

Similar to VB Kanchi Veerans, bowling was a big point to ponder upon for Karaikudi Kaalai as well. They scored a decent total on a tricky batting surface but failed to contain Ruby Trichy Warriors. Although they somehow escaped with a tie and may consider themselves lucky, they will have a lot to improve upon in their coming fixture against VB Kanchi Veerans.
In addition to their bowling, their fielders too didn't look prepared for taking sharp chances, which was highlighted by their skipper as well. Having said that, they had plenty of positives to take from that game. The batting of Srikkanth Aniruddha at the top when other batsmen struggled to get going and in the super over was a commendable effort. R Rajkumar played a handy knock towards the end, which happened to be the difference between the two sides.
All in all, Karaikudi Kaalai are a pretty well-balanced side which was apparent in the last edition of the tournament as well. They displayed a couple of vulnerabilities in the first match, which, however, should be easy to fix in the upcoming game. They bat deep with the likes of Rajkumar, Maan Bafna, and Shajahn available in their late middle-order and won't be an easy side to deal with in the upcoming fixture.

Check out the Dream11 Fantasy team for the Tamil Nadu Premier League match between Karaikudi Kaalai and VB Kanchi Veerans
These are early days in Tamil Nadu Premier Leagues, and the teams are likely to take some time to find their best combination for the tournament. Karaikudi Kaalai, however, got plenty of things right in the previous match and appeared to be a relatively settled unit. VB Kanchi Veerans, on the other hand, did little right and they now to show plenty of improvement for them to emerge on top in this crucial fixture. Considering the teams on paper and the fact that Karaikudi Kaalai are coming off a close win and will be brimming with confidence makes them firm favorites to emerge on top in the upcoming fixture.
