The VB Kanchi Veerans have been one of the worst sides of the tournament along with the CHepauk Super Gillies. They have yet to register a win in the tournament after four matches and will be hoping to end with something to show for their efforts this season.
Their opponents are the Lyca Kovai Kings, a team that is very much in the hunt for a playoff spot. On paper, this match appears to be one-sided and could be over quickly. The risk for the Lyca Kovai Kings, though, is complacency and a slip up at the wrong time in the tournament.
Perhaps the biggest disappointment of this tournament has been the batting of Baba Aparajith. From being one of the most talented youngsters in the country and being a potential recruit for the India side, Baba Aparajith has regressed and is a shadow of the player he once was.
The Veerans have failed to win a match so far and the reason is quite apparent looking at the stats. None of its batsmen have done anything of note in the tournament and only a total of two fifties have been recorded.
The innings by Francis Rokins and Mohit Hariharan were encouraging because both the players have only played two matches for the side so far. They are also the only two players to have hit a fifty and raise questions about the selection tactics of the team being used in the beginning.
The only way for the Veerans batting is up from this stage and they can continue to hope for a bit of magic from Aparajith, Vishal Vaidhya, or Sanjay Yadav going forward.
The bowling has been ordinary as none of the players has taken more than three wickets so far, The economy rate for most of the players is above 8 for the tournament and that is an indictment of the lack of control they have exerted.
S Siddharth, B Aparajith, P Francis Rokins, RS Mokit Hariharan, C Shriram, S Chandrasekhar, R Sanjay Yadav, Aushik Srinivas, S Arun, Deeban Lingesh, R Divakar.
We always say that one player can make or break a team in this tournament and that is exactly what Shahrukh Khan is doing for the Lyca Kovai Kings. He has scored 267 runs in the tournament already at a blistering strike rate of 150.00 and is leading his team to the knockouts with ease.
With former Indian star, Abhinav Mukund in the side providing valuable support as well, the outlook for the Lyca Kovaiu Kings is quite positive. Antony Dhas and Aakil Srinaath have both played some useful inning to provide a well-rounded batting unit to the side.
We think that the players we mentioned will be lining up to take on one of the weakest bowling sides in the tournament. This could be a great opportunity for them to not only win this match but get some personal milestones out of the way as well.
T Natarajan has been the best fast bowler in this tournament and his presence give the Lyca Kovai Kings a real edge. Natarajan bowls with pace and is able to hit the Yorkers when needed to be invaluable at the death.
M Rajesh, Ajith Ram, and Maniganadan are also having a decent tournament. The Lyca Kovai Kings are one of the few sides in the tournament that seem to have got the balance right in its team composition.
Abhinav Mukund, Shahrukh Khan, Ashwin Venkataraman, Ravi Kumar Rohith, Akkil Srinaath, Antony Dhas, M Prasanth Rajesh, S Ajith Ram, Krishnamoorthy Vignesh, T Natarajan, S Manigandan.
The team winning the toss is likely to bat first
Tirunelveli is predicted to see some rain on match day but we are still hopeful of getting a full match in. Some interruptions are likely, though. The pitch has started to slow up and could make life a little difficult for the batsmen but runs are still to be had a plenty.
A score of 160-170 should be considered par.
We have no hesitation in recommending backing the Lyca Kovai Kings to win in this match.
