About the Match
The Warriors yet again suffered defeat, this time against Knights by 4 wickets; they are at the bottom of the table with just 2 points, and will take on Lions, who are placed 4th with 8 points, on 26th November at Cape Town. The Lions also lost their recent outing, against Cape Cobras by a narrow margin of 6 runs, and are desperate for a win here. It needs to be seen if the Warriors are able to make amends and garner 2 more points or succumb to pressure on Sunday.
Colin Ackermann performed brilliantly, posting a strong 74 off 51 while batting first against Knights. Others like captain JJ Smuts, Jerry Nqolo, Jonker and Lesiba Ngoepe tried to keep the scoreboard ticking but they could muster only 155 runs in the end. Smuts contributed with 2 wickets also, while Andrew Birch, Sisanda Magala and Solo Nqweni provided regular wickets but they couldn’t stop the Knights from winning the match.
Against Titans in the last match they played, they had to chase 173 runs but the top-order collapsed like a pack of cards. Smuts and Cloete tried to build the foundation by scoring 20 and 32 runs respectively but others like Ackermann, Kelly Smuts, Nqweni and Nqolo were dismissed cheaply. Andrew Birch contributed with 24 runs while Magala pitched in with 19 but they were all-out for a meagre 111 in reply. Earlier, bowlers like Magala, Smuts and Gqamane proved to be costly and despite BD Walters, Kelly Smuts and Solo Nqweni taking a wicket each, they couldn’t stop Titans from posting 172 runs.
The Warriors are yet to win a match this season and they will need to pull up their socks in order to do so here; they have good talented players with bat and ball, and will have to put their best foot forward.
Chasing 146 against Cobras, Rassie van der Dussen posted a well-made 51 while Reeza Hendricks, Mangaliso Mosehle and Dwaine Pretorius tried to keep the innings going. However, the middle order players couldn’t boost the run-flow and they feel short of the target by 6 runs. Earlier, the bowlers had done a commendable job to restrict the hard-hitting Cobras to 145 thanks to pacers Kagiso Rabada, Hardus Viljoen and Willem Mulder taking 2 wickets apiece. They lost the match by a whisker and will be motivated to do better here in the upcoming match.
Against Dolphins, they had won the match by 6 wickets after chasing down 169 runs convincingly thanks to a power-packed performance by Reeza Hendricks, who scored an unbeaten 102 off 72. Rassie van der Dussen also showed class as he scored 57 off 42 and helped wrap up the game. The bowling unit also did well with captain Aaron Phangiso taking 2-25 while Viljoen, Rabada, Bjorn Fortuin and Mulder were among the wicket-takers.
Lions have had a mixed run so far and they will be eager to take it up a notch by winning against the Warriors; with a balanced mix of pacers and spinners, they surely look to be a tough nut to crack.
Both sides have match-winners and experienced players, who can shoulder the responsibilities and take their team to victory here; however, we feel that the Lions’ hard-hitting top-order and the bowling variety they have, make them clear favorites to win on Sunday
