About the Match
Lions registered their first win of the tournament in the last game against Cobras after suffering two massive defeats at the hands of Titans and Dolphins. Warriors, too, won their match against Knights by a whopping margin of 42 runs. The two teams now lock horns at Port Elizabeth on Friday, 25th November. The two teams are virtually at the opposite ends of the points table with Warriors placed comfortably at the second position and Lions languishing at the bottom of the table. Although Warriors won't have any effect on where they're placed in the points table, it will take them closer to the Titans who are currently at the top. A win for Lions can take them to as high as 3rd spot, provided other results go in in their favour. Both the teams are coming after scoring a win and with the confidence soaring, it could be an enthralling encounter.
Warriors have the services of players like JJ Smuts, Colin Ingram, and Colin Ackerman who have been instrumental in their success in the tournament so far. Ackerman already has a score of 40-odd and a half-century to his name in the tournament. JJ Smuts, C Jonker and Ingram have chipped in with their contributions as well.
In their last game, Warriors put 157 runs on the board and won the game by 42 runs which is a huge margin considering the fact that they didn't score a massive total while batting first. Christiaan Jonker top-scored for the team with 48 off just 27 balls. With the ball, Andrew Birch and Basheeru-Deen Walters picked up five wickets between them with latter responsible for three. Sisanda Magala and JJ Smuts contributed with 2 wickets each and Solo Nqweni bagged one scalp.
All in all, Warriors have played well in the tournament so far and their position on the points table shows that. They have experienced players like JJ Smuts, Colin Ingrama and Colin Ackerman who can tear apart any bowling lineup on their day. Lions will certainly have a job cut out when they face Warriors on Friday.
Lions did not have best of the starts to the tournament as they lost two important games by massive margins. Although they won their third game, their win was far from convincing. They had scored 165 for 5 in 19.1 Overs when the rain stopped play. The match was reduced to 6-Overs a side and Lions defended the target of 70 by just 3 runs. Aaron Phangiso bowled well as he gave away only five runs in his over.
In the earlier two matches, Lions' batting has faltered miserably and they lost their matches by 42 and 49 runs respectively. Their bowling too wasn't particularly effective as on both the occasions the opponents posted 190+ on the board. Their batting, however, did better in the third game despite a few players being absent.
The Lions appeared to be one of the better units on paper and languishing at the bottom of the table was certainly not expected. Considering their excellent spin attack, it won't be surprising if they defeat Warriors who are going well at the moment.
Lions have clawed they way back to the winning way albeit by the virtue of DL Method and the Warriors are looking in great form. Both the teams are evenly balanced, but with experienced players like JJ Smuts, Colin Ackerman and Colin Ingram, Warriors look better placed to win this match
