About the Match
The Ruby Kanchi Warriors from last season are now the Ruby Trichy Warriors and would be hoping that this change in name also brings a change in their fortunes. They have a tough opening match against the defending champions, the Albert TUTI Patriots, who have started this tournament with one victory already.
Ruby Trichy Warriors
The Warriors had a terrible 2016 season where they won only one match out of their four and were pretty much outclassed by the rest of the teams. The core of their team is still the same as last year including players like Nilesh Subramaniam who top-scored for the team (185 runs), Jagatheesan Kousik (124 runs) and skipper Baba Inderjith (113 runs).
The big hitting prowess will be provided by Akkil Srinath and Bharath Shankar.
The Warriors batting lineup is not the best in this tournament but it is definitely not the worst either. They started off with some solid momentum last time before falling apart in the latter matches. Their coach Tinu Yohannan has stressed the importance of getting the basics right and then letting the results speak for themselves.
All of the bowlers that contributed in meaningful ways to the Warriors campaign last year have also been retained. Jesuraj was the leading wicket taker with 8 wickets to his name but J Kaushik who took 7 wickets in just 17.5 overs bowled who was the pick of the bowlers in our opinion.
Both of them along with Pratibhan and Prabhu will need to elevate their game to another level so that the Warriors can win some more matches this time around.
Albert TUTI Patriots
The defending champions are actually missing a couple of big players like Dinesh Karthik and Abhinav Mukund but still have plenty in their tank to be able to dominate this tournament. The one player that everyone will be looking out for is Washington Sundar.
Sundar was very impressive in the IPL and almost seems a level above other players in this league. He started off the tournament with a belligerent 69 and picked up three wickets as well. We think it is safe to say that the Patriots will be well on their way to victory is Sundar can repeat anything similar to his performance from the last game.
It’s not all about one player, though, and in K Gandhi, S Nathan and the stand-in skipper, S Anand, the Patriots have plenty of batting firepower to fall back on.
There is still no denying the fact that if Washington Sundar fails this team becomes much more beatable.
The bowling attack will be led by Aswin Crist, Athisayaraj and Akash Sumra apart from Washington Sundar. The availability of players like Aushik and Ganesh Moorthi to bowl a couple of overs in the innings is also a big advantage for the Patriots.
Confidence will be high in the camp after they started off strongly but they would be wise to guard against any overconfidence in a match that could be quite tricky for them.
Pitch and Conditions
The match will be played at Dindigul, the second match in as many days and there are some contrasting reports about the pitch. Tinu Yohannan thinks that the pitch is a little slow but good for batting while Aswin Crist reckons this is the fastest pitch they will get in the tournament.
We think that this will be a high scoring match on a pitch that is excellent for batting as the Dindigul Dragons batsmen showed in their chase. The small boundaries should allow the big hitter to free their arms without any fear.
