About the Match
Warwickshire with 7 points from 5 matches is playing Northamptonshire with 5 points from 5 matches at Birmingham on 19th June. Playing for the first time against each other during this tournament, both sides are looking to outsmart the other to go ahead in their standing on the points table; it will surely be a tough contest as the competition gets heated up.
The Warwicks played Nottinghamshire about a week ago and won the match by 18 runs, after challenging the opponent by electing to bat first on winning the toss, with an aim to establish an unbeatable total. However, their confidence to build a tall total was an under estimation of the strengths of the opponent with respect to their bowling capabilities. After the opener Porterfield was dismissed for 6 off 8 balls, Webb joined Chopra in the middle but could not sustain long. Evans and Javid played sensible cricket and took the total to 156 for 5, Evans knocking off a breezy 45 off just 23 balls. This may not be what the team wanted to set as a target for the opponent; however, the Warwicks bowlers proved too good for the Notts with the batsmen down the order succumbing to the intelligent bowling by Malik, Wright, Gordon, Rankin, Patel and Javid and thus able to muster only 138 at the end of the 20 overs for the loss of 7 wickets, giving the Warwicks an incredible victory by 18 runs. Warwicks have the required variety in their bowling attack to surprise the opponent and can pile up good total and defend it successfully.
Northants last played Yorkshire on 13th and lost the match by a good margin of 16 runs, electing to bat on winning the toss and amassing 181 for the loss of just 3 wickets due to an impressive batting by Lees, Bairstow and Lyth. The weakness in the Northants’ attack was openly visible as they could hardly penetrate into the stubborn batting line up of the Yorks employing 6 bowlers. Stove, Azharullah and Spriegel, were only able to claim 1 wicket each and Willey, Crook and White remained cool spectators to the onslaught by Yorks. Having allowed the opponent to dominate the proceedings in the middle, Northants started well with 30 runs for the 1st wicket and the batsmen down the line contributed well; Levi scored 76 off 47 balls and held one end. They seemed to be cruising steadily towards the target, but a loss of 2 wickets in the 17th and 18th over cost them the match and they lost it by 16 runs, managing to score only 165 for 9. Northants need to improve in their bowling against the in-form Warwicks, if they have any intention to contain the batsmen; and their batsmen, who have the potential to reach the target in a planned manner, need to bring out all guns blazing here to put up a very good team effort.
Warwickshire is in good form and are well prepared to trounce the Northants, who are struggling a bit as a team, and win the contest.
