Up next in the tournament, Wellington Blaze Women are all set to take on the Otago Sparks Women in a match that will likely govern the fate of the two sides. The two sides are placed at the top of the points table and the winner of this match will end up cementing their place in the playoffs.

The match between the two sides is to be played at Basin Reserve, Wellington on the morning of Thursday, 6th January 2021.

WB vs OS Team Previews

Wellington Blaze Women

Even though they are placed at the second spot on the ladder, Wellington Blaze Women have been the best side of the tournament. They have so far won all their matches and have been the most dominant side in the tournament, which is also suggested by their superb net run rate of 2.600. They have 20 points at the moment and a win here will certainly push them to the top of the table.

Wellington Women are coming off a solid 66-run win over Otago Women in the last game they played. Batting first on a sporting surface, they managed to put up a challenging total of 157 runs on the board. Amelia Kerr and Leigh Kasperek made their experience count as they together added 65 runs for the fourth wicket before Amelia Kerr was dismissed. Amelia Kerr ended up top-scoring for Wellington with a 50-ball 56.

While it were the batsmen who set up the match for Wellington Blaze Women, it were the bowlers who closed it. A total of 157 was never a difficult one to chase, even on a sporting wicket, but the Blaze bowlers ensured a hard time for Spark batsmen, handing them a 66-run defeat, which was also the first for Wellington Blaze. All bowlers picked up a couple of wickets each with Amelia Kerr being the most economical of the lot.

On paper, Wellington Women gain strength from the experienced middle-order that has scored runs more often than not. Besides, the presence of Amelia Kerr and Leigh Kasperek adds depth to their strong batting lineup. All in all, they have an incredibly well-balanced team and if they are able to play to their potential, getting past them could prove to be incredibly difficult.

Otago Sparks Women

Otago Sparks are currently leading the points table with six wins from seven matches with their only loss coming against Wellington Blaze in what was the last match of the tournament for both these sides. Although they have played seven matches already, they are sitting in a pretty comfortable position that a win here will cement their place in the next round.

Prior to their defeat at the hands of Wellington Blaze Women, the Sparks were having a terrific run. They had a winning streak of five matches, which took a sensational all-around performance from Wellington Women. They then bounced back with a sparkling win over Auckland Hearts Women and will be looking to continue building on that.

Batting first against the Hearts, Otago Sparks Women rode on a fantastic fifty by Suzie Bates, who scored 89 off 61. She was ably assisted by Katey Martin who scored 40 off 35 deliveries. Otago Women eventually finished with 153 runs on the board, which proved to be a little too high to climb for the Auckland Women in the second innings. Picking up four wickets for 12, EJ Carson was the pick of the bowling for Otago Women. She was ably assisted by ME Loe and Emma Black, who both picked up a couple of wickets each.

On paper, Otago Women have a decent side that seems to be a bit over-reliant on their top-order. Suzie Bates and Katey Martin have been their top players thus far and a lot will depend on them. Having said that, they will certainly need support from the youngers. If their experienced players are able to do well and get ample support from youngsters in this match, Otago Women will certainly be in business.

WB vs OS Toss Prediction

Even though the conditions have not changed a lot during the course for 40 overs in the entire tournament, we have seen chasing being a tad difficult and defending. Score-board pressure has played a vital role in almost all the high-scoring matches and both captains will be wary of that. Considering that and the other factors stated above, the captain winning the toss will be expected to bat first.

Pitch and Conditions

When the tournament started, the conditions favored the low-scoring match more than those are favoring now. We are already beginning to see the average first-innings totals notching up towards 150 in the last few matches and we expect nothing different from this surface as well. Both sides are expected to be well acquainted with the conditions and batsmen are likely to thrive. Bowlers, on the other hand, will have assistance early on in the innings and they will all want to cash in on that. The team batting first will be eying a total of at least 150 runs here.
