About the Match
After an emphatic victory of 3-0 against Bangladesh in the ODI series, West Indies now prepares to go up against the visitors in the 2-match test series, the first of which begins on 5th Sep at Kingstown. The last time the two teams played a test series in West Indies, Bangladesh had triumphed because of the Windies’ internal player problems. However, the hosts are a much stronger team now and will be a formidable force to reckon with; Bangladesh facing a weakened bowling attack depends on its batsmen to come up with the results. It will be interesting to see the teams giving it their best and trying to dominate the other with the resources in hand; the team that can display perseverance and determination will surely come up right on top.
Darren Bravo, Dinesh Ramdin, Chris Gayle and Simmons are in good nick with the bat as seen in the ODI format and they will form the foundation of a strong innings when setting a target; along with all-rounders like Pollard, Sammy and the captain cool Dwayne Bravo, this will be a tough team to beat on home soil. The bowling squad is a tough force with Rampaul, Narine, Roach, Holder and Dwayne, all looking to be in top shape as witnessed in their wicket-taking abilities in the series so far. However, the test format will pose a challenge as they need to focus more and deliver with the goods when required the most. Rampaul with a figure of 4-29 in the last ODI, showed great promise and will be a key resource; Narine is another strong asset for the team who cleverly dismisses his opponents displaying calm and patience even when the going gets tough. It will be a true test of their spirit and team work in the first test and they look well placed to put up a good show over the weekend.
With Sohag Gazi being recalled, the bowling squad falls short of his services with the ball; and will now heavily depend on the talents of Al-Amin Hossain, Rubel Hossain, Safiul Islam, Mahmudullah, Razzak and Mortaza. In the batting line-up, the captain Mushfiqur Rahim and Tamim Iqbal are looking sturdy while the middle order comprising of Mahmudullah, Mominul Haque and Nasir Hossain need to keep the scoreboard ticking and play with a level-headed approach to survive through the test. Anamul Haque, who did well in the first ODI needs to find his form back and stick his feet firmly on the ground to give a strong partnership with Iqbal and Imrul Kayes. Though the bowling attack will be weakened, there are a number of talented players who can definitely step up their game and threaten the hosts. The batsmen need to pull up their socks and come out all guns blazing if they want to earn back some respect by performing well in the first test, instead of trying to settle for a draw.
While the visitors will be eager to avenge their humiliating defeat in the ODI series and try to bounce back into the game, the Windies are a motivated lot who will do everything possible to keep the advantage they have. Though the contest will be fiery one, we expect the West Indies team to get the better of the Bangladeshis in the first test.
