About the Match
Taking the lead 1-0 in the two match test series against Bangladesh, West Indies looks ahead to clinch the series by winning the 2nd test against the visitors that is scheduled to start on 13th Sep at Gros Islet. Bangladesh suffered a loss by 10 wickets, attributed to a lack of clear cut strategy, in the first match and will be eager to make amends here. While the hosts have a few problems of their own, the players look motivated enough to set the stage for a win; the contest will surely see both sides trying to dominate the other with the resources in hand.
Kraigg Brathwaite, Chanderpaul and Darren Bravo built solid partnerships in the first innings to take the total to 484; Brathwaite displayed good technique and determination to post a massive 212 off 447 deliveries while Chanderpaul scored an unbeaten 85. Suleiman Benn, with an economy rate of 1.58 taking 5 wickets and good contribution by all bowlers led to a total collapse of the Bangladeshi batting line-up for just 182 runs in reply. Later Roach’s 4-wicket haul giving away just 64 runs sealed a victory for the team by 10 wickets. The batsmen are in good form and the performance of the top order players like Brathwaite, Bravo and Chanderpaul has brought in a fresh wave of energy amongst the players; with Gayle absent for the upcoming match, the batsmen need to deliver once again. The bowlers haven been on a roll and they bring the wickets at regular intervals, upping their chances of a victory once again. They just need to stay focused and come out all guns blazing to win convincingly against the visitors and give the team the required boost ahead of the big matches.
A lack of technical application and absence of any strategy cost them the first test match after a complete collapse on the batting front. Players like Tamim Iqbal, Mahmudullah, Imrul Kayes and Nair Hossain who had done well in the one-day matches, couldn’t step up and deliver for the cause of the team. The 2nd innings fared better for the batsmen as Iqbal scored 53 while Mahmudullah posted 66 runs; however, it was Mushfiqur Rahim’s 116 run effort that stood the tallest for the visitors but it wasn’t enough. The bowlers were outsmarted by the Windies batsmen though Taijul Islam claimed 5 wickets with an economy rate of 2.87; they need to be more precise and keep a positive attitude if they want to make any difference here. The players need to lift their spirits and bounce back with a can-do approach if they want to level the series and end the tour on a positive note.
While team Bangladesh would have learnt some bitter lessons, they need to make a sweeping change in their thinking to put up a strong fight against the hosts. Though the contest will be fought better by the visitors, West Indies looks better placed to come up trumps once again.
