About the Match
Although India was denied a win in the second test, they continue to lead 1-0 in this 4-match Test series against hosts West Indies; the men in blue will try to dominate in the 3rd Test that’s scheduled to start on 9th August at Gros Islet. The Windies middle-order kept the fight alive with their determined batting and led the contest to a draw on day 5 as they accumulated 388 runs in the second innings. They have kept the series alive and will try to put up a better show in the upcoming game; India on the other hand would have learnt some lessons after letting the match slip away, and will try to go back to their aggressive form in a focused manner.
Roston Chase achieved what no other Windies player has done in the last fifty years, scoring a test hundred and taking 5 wickets in the same match, a feat Garry Sobers earned fame for; his heroics paid off for the team as they ended the second test in a draw, denying the visitors a win. Players like Kraigg Brathwaite and Chandrika yet again failed to build the foundation while other star players like Marlon Samuels, Darren Bravo and Jason Holder can try to do better in steadying the run-flow.
Jermaine Blackwood has been scoring runs consistently and along with Chase can stabilize the innings in the middle order; bowlers Shannon Gabriel, Miguel Cummins and Jason Holder have been putting up disciplined attacks and can stifle the Indians here while spinners Chase and Bishoo can outwit the hard-hitting batsmen.
Overall, the youngsters showed grit and determination and this will surely inspire the team to fight harder; the hosts can challenge the Indian batting line-up if they strategize well here.
Ashwin has been taking a flurry of wickets here in the Caribbean and he is a strong asset for the team; his 5-wicket haul in the first innings of the last test coupled with 2 wickets each by speedsters Ishant Sharma and Mohammad Shami helped India get the upper hand. Amit Mishra took a total of 3 wickets and along with Ashwin can try to cleverly outwit the hosts in the upcoming game. While the bowlers did their best to provide quick breakthroughs, they can put up more variations in order to contain the middle-order batsmen like Chase, who turned the game around.
KL Rahul’s brilliant 158 and Ajinkya Rahane’s well-made 108 were the highlights of the Indian batting but others like Pujara and Dhawan can do better to build a solid foundation. Kohli, Rahane, Rahul, Saha and others have been successful in keeping the scoreboard ticking and they will try to bring out their firepower yet again in the third test.
Shami’s return to form is a good sign and he brings depth to the pace attack along with Yadav and Sharma; Ashwin has proven his strengths time and again and will is a vital pillar for this team. They have the psychological advantage and can be a tough nut to crack by a young team like the Windies.
Both sides have youthful talent and experience in the right mix which can help their team overcome crunch situations here; India leads 1-0 but they won’t take the Windies lightly. Although the hosts can challenge the visitors, we feel that India with an all-round performance can win again here.
