There are a number of teams that will be cheering the Otago Volts as they take on the Super Smash 2020-21 league leaders, Wellington Firebirds, in this next match. The Firebirds have won five out of the six matches they have played and are threatening to lock up the first place pretty quickly for themselves.
A loss in the previous match for the Firebirds gave the chasing pack some hope and the Volts could do them another big favor by pulling off an upset here. The Otago Volts, though, have won just two matches out of their six in the Super Smash, and winning this contest against the Firebirds is not going to be easy.
Wellington Firebirds vs Otago Volts Super Smash 2020-21 is going to be played at the Basin Reserve, Wellington on the 24th of January 2021.
The match against the Canterbury Kings was not the best one for the Firebirds. Not only did they pick up their first loss of the tournament but they also saw Michael Bracewell be injured in a freak accident.
Jimmy Neesham played a powerful drive that hit Bracewell square in the helmet and caused some bleeding from above the eye. Thankfully, it appears as if a concussion has been ruled out and so Bracewell may well be available for this match.
The Firebirds have a strong batting lineup led by an in-form Finn Allen. The player with the most fifties to his name has been playing with exceptional freedom and consistency. He is going to lead the batting with support from Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra, and Tom Blundell.
This strong batting lineup is supported by a very good bowling attack too as Hamish Bennett, Logan van Beek, Peter Younghusband, Jimmy Neesham, and Rachin Ravindra take up the responsibilities.
Devon Conway, Tom Blundell, Michael Bracewell, Jamie Gibson, Finn Allen, Troy Johnson, Rachin Ravindra, Hamish Bennett, Logan van Beek, PY Husband, Ben Sears.
Otago continues to underperform in this season of the Super Smash as it lost its previous match to the Central DIstricts. Most of its batsmen got starts but none of them were able to make it count. Neil broom, Nick Kelly, and Anaru Kitchen all had decent scores to show at the end of the match but not one of them crossed fifty.
The batting has been a big issue for the Otago Volts this season and we think they are going to continue to struggle.
On paper, they have the batting to be able to challenge the Wellington Firebirds but it does not look like they are in the best form coming into this match.
Mitchell McClenahan, Jacob Duffy, Michael Rippon, and Nathan Smith form a very good bowling attack. So far, though, this bowling attack has not been able to win matches for its side.
The lack of runs has hurt it, yes, but even then we think Duffy and McClenaghan would be disappointed with their performances.
The Otago Volts are currently lesser than the sum of their parts.
Max Chu, Hamish Rutherford, Dale Phillips, Nick Kelly, NT Broom, Joshua Finnie, MJ Rippon, Anaru Kitchen, Nathan Smith, MJ Mcclenaghan, Jacob Duffy.
The team that wins the toss is going to want to field first. Defending a total on the brilliant batting surfaces in New Zealand is always a tough thing to do.

There are a few clouds forecast for match day but nothing that should concern us. The cricket should be able to go on uninterrupted. The pitch at the Basin Reserve is always very good for batting. There is no grass on it for the T20 matches and so the bowlers will struggle to get any assistance.
A score of around 180 should be considered par.
We are going to stick with the league leaders in this contest. The Wellington Firebirds have a great batting lineup and most of their players are in good form. T20 cricket is a lot about how you are playing right now rather than what you have done in the past.
The Otago Volts have an impressive squad but they just do not have the results to be able to advise backing them right now.
