West Indies managed to win the ODI series 3-0 although the series was a bit closer than the scoreline suggests. The action now shifts to T20 cricket, a format in which the West Indies has been at its strongest I recent years and Ireland its weakest. Both sides are fielding their first-choice of players as they get ready for the T20 World Cup in about 10 months.
Dwayne Bravo has returned to the West Indies international side and will add some very valuable experience to the bowling attack. Ireland, on the other hand, would be keen to try and test out its combinations against one of the most dangerous T20 sides in world cricket.
West Indies vs Ireland 1st T20 is going to be played at the National Cricket Stadium, St.George’s. Grenada on the 15th of January 2020.
It is brilliant to see the West Indian team become stronger in all formats of cricket over the last few years. This resurgence started with T20 cricket and a number of young players have emerged from the Caribbean Premier League to push for places in the playing eleven.
The fight for batting spots is going to be intense and Kieron Pollard is going to have a tough time picking the final eleven. Evin Lewis and Lendl Simmons seem certain to open the batting followed by Brandon King, Evin Lewis, Nicholas Pooran, and Kieron Pollard.
We hope that Pollard comes up the order whenever the opportunity arises and dictates games as he does in the CPL.
Rovman Powell and Dwayne Bravo could slot in as the all-rounders while Sheldon Cottrell, Hayden Walsh, and Kesrick Williams are likely to be the bowlers for the first match.
This is a very strong playing eleven with a deep batting lineup, power all through the batting order, and at least six bowling options. West Indies needs to start thinking about its potential squad for the T20 World Cup and so we don’t think they are going to be taking it easy in this match at all.
LMP Simmons, Evin Lewis, Shimron Hetmyer, Nicholas Pooran, Kieron Pollard, Sherfane Rutherford, Dwayne Bravo, Hayden Walsh Jr, Khary Pierre, KOK Williams, Sheldon Cottrell.
T20 cricket has been one of the most difficult to master for Ireland and it has constantly lost matches to the Netherlands, Scotland, and Nepal in various competitions. Ireland cannot however, be counted out before the start of the series. It showed plenty of fight in the ODI series and came within a whisker of winning the second match.
One of the biggest problems facing Ireland in T20 cricket is its batting.
Paul Stirling, Andrew Balbirnie, and Kevin O’Brien are the three batsmen that will be tasked with leading the batting and trying to get as many boundaries as possible. Gareth Delany showed some glimpses of talent and Harry Tector is a promising batsman as well they are untested at the international level.
Simi Singh and Gary Wilson can bat but they are not natural T20 style players.
Barry McCarthy, Boyd Rankin, George Dockrell, Mark Adair, and Joshua Little could be the bowlers picked for the first T20.
This is pretty similar to the attack that Ireland had in the ODI’s and they had a decent amount of success. The Irish bowling is going to be under a lot more pressure, though, as the West Indian batsmen are going to come after it hard and not relent.
A lack of power hitters, insufficient depth in the batting, no wrist-spinners in the bowling attack, and a mediocre pace bowling attack are some of the glaring problems in the Irish T20 squad.

The team that wins the toss may want to field first with the rain expected to interrupt the match at regular intervals.

There is about a 30% chance of rain that has been forecast in St.George’s Grenada on match day. The last ODI played there was also marred by rain and we think the T20 could go the same way. The pitch was not too bad for batting as the West Indian batsmen showed. A typically slow surface that is flat and has very little for the bowlers on offer can be expected.
A score of about 160 can be considered par for the surface.

We don’t think Ireland has much of a chance in this series. The T20 format is one where upsets can happen quite easily since a single player can influence the match so much but we still would not advise taking the risk here.
West Indies has a better bowling attack, a far better T20 batting lineup, and is in good form as well.
Bet on West Indies to win.
