WI vs RSA Match Prediction - Jun 10, 2021

A West Indies vs South Africa Test series is something to be cherished simply for the fact that it happens so rarely. We have to go back nearly six years for the last time these two teams played a Test against each other and almost eleven years back for the last time South Africa played a Test match in West Indies.

As we said, this is a rare event!

The teams have changed so much in the past few years that it is almost pointless to look at the past records between them. South Africa is no longer the dominant force it once was in Test Cricket and the West Indies has seen a slow but definite improvement.

While South Africa comes to the West Indies as the favorite, underestimating the West Indies at home is not something you want to do.

Match Prediction and cricket betting tips for West Indies vs South Africa 1st Test Match 2021. The match is going to be played at the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, Gros Islet, St. Lucia starting on the 10th of June 2021.

WI vs RSA Team Previews

West Indies

The West Indies has a pretty stable core of players in the Test arena now. Kraigg Brathwaite has been the captain for a few matches now and has found a lot of success. He also is a pivotal part of the batting lineup.

He is going to be supported by Kieran Powell, Shai Hope, Nkrumah Bonner, and Roston Chase in the batting lineup. Jermaine Blackwood would be quite unlucky to miss out on selection, however, the competition for spots is pretty tough.

With Jason Holder, Joshua Da Silva, and Rakheem Cornwall in the lineup as well, the West Indian batting is very deep. Alzarri Joseph and Kemar Roach are guaranteed starters if fit and that leaves the tough decision of playing Jayden Seales or not.

Cornwall may have to sit out if Seales plays but that will probably be decided after seeing the nature of the pitch.

Either way, West Indies has a lot of batting on paper and a very good bowling attack.

The challenge is going to be how the West Indies faces up to the South African quicks. We would be tempted to go ‘Under’ the total first inning score for the West Indies in this match since its batting lineup is known to collapse in a hurry against quality pace.

Jason Holder is also very good value to be the highest run-scorer and wicket-taker for the West Indies.

South Africa

Dean Elgar is going to take the reigns of the South African Test team and we think that is a good move. He is somewhat like Graeme Smith in attitude even though he does not have the same kind of batting talent.

The South African team is a mix of some very exciting but slightly untested batsmen and a very good bowling lineup.

Aiden Markram is back in the scheme of things and is going to open the batting alongside Elgar. He looked good in Pakistan before getting out after getting set and we think a big score from him is around the corner.

Sarel Erwee could get the number three position followed by Temba Bavuma, Rassie van der Dussen, and Quinton de Kock. Erwee and Bavuma could be seen as weak links in this batting lineup, especially as the Duke ball is going to swing for large parts of the game.

The number seven position could be a toss-up between George Linde or Wiaan Mulder depending upon the conditions.

This is a batting lineup that we can see doing well or collapsing completely on bad days. An in-between performance seems unlikely!

South Africa’s real strength is its bowling attack. Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje are genuine quicks that are going to be at the West Indian throats. The third pacer is likely to be Lungi Ngidi with Keshav Maharaj as the lead spinner.

There is enough talent and firepower to pick up 20 wickets in the match for sure. Nortje would be our pick to be the leading wicket-taker for South Africa in this match.

WI vs RSA Toss Prediction

The team that wins the toss is going to want to bat first. The pitch tends to get more difficult for batting as the match progresses and so winning the toss is a big advantage.

Read our guide on toss predictions to learn how we analyze and come up with our tips.

Pitch and Conditions

The weather forecast for this match is pretty good and we should have enough time to get a result. There has been a good amount of pace and bounce in St. Lucia over the last few years. The fast-bowlers on both sides are definitely going to have something to work with. The Duke ball always swings and so the batsmen are going to have their work cut out.

The spinners tend to play more of a holding role and so avoid betting markets around their success.

A score of 350 or more should be the minimum that teams aim for in their first inning.

WI vs RSA Betting Tips

You have to go as far back as 1991 for the last time the West Indies won a series against South Africa. There have been eight Tests played between West Indies and South Africa in the Caribbean and South Africa has won six out of those. Draws are very rare between these two teams and so you can look at the three-way betting markets to get better odds.

South Africa is the team to back in our opinion. While it has some question marks over its batting, the bowling lineup is superb and very capable of running through the West Indies.

We are huge fans of Van der Dussen and think he could be a big success on this tour. He bets in the middle by when the ball has lost its shone and the bowlers are tired. He has the best opportunities to score runs.

We like this bet because it takes a lot of guesswork out of it. We know that South Africa is a stronger team than the West Indies and on most occasions it will end up taking a 1st inning lead no matter what happens at the toss. Excellent odds for this bet in our opinion.
