The T20 series between West Indies and Sri Lanka was very exciting! We don’t think many people expected Sri Lanka to come as close as it did to beat the West Indies. Now, it is time for the ODI series between West Indies and Sri Lanka, also in Antigua, but in a different stadium.
We think it is fair to say that West Indies tends to struggle as the format becomes a bit longer and so the 50 over format is going to be more challenging. It still has a full-strength to pick from, though, and that was not always the case in recent times.
Sri Lanka will add a few key players to the side and hope that it is able to use its strengths better in the longer format of the game. One thing is for sure, there is going to be no shortage of excitement!
West Indies vs Sri Lanka 1st ODI 2021 is going to be played at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua on the 10th of March 2021.
It is a pleasure to see West Indies cricket on the rise again and put out some truly terrific squads in all formats of the game. There is work to be done but the work that Kieron Pollard is doing for the West Indies deserves more credit than it often gets.
For the ODI series against Sri Lanka, the core of the West Indies batting lineup remains the same as the T20 side. Evin Lewis will open the batting alongside Shai Hope or Kyle Mayers. Darren Bravo, Nicholas Pooran, Kieron Pollard, Jason Holder, Fabian Allen, and even Alzarri Joseph are all pretty good with the bat.
This gives the West Indie batting till number nine.
We all know about the six-hitting capabilities of this lineup but the ability of players like Evin Lewis, Shai Hope, and Darren Bravo to play the long inning is perhaps even more important in this format.
The challenge for the West Indies is going to be to counter the Sri Lankan spinners effectively as that is where they struggled in the T20 format as well.
Jason Holder and Alzarri Joseph will lead the bowling lineup alongside Romario Shepherd and possibly Kevin Sinclair. Kayle Mayers, Kieron Pollard, and Fabian Allen can all bowl as needed giving the West Indies plenty of options.
Shai Hope, Nicholas Pooran, Kieron Pollard, Darren Bravo, Evin Lewis, Jason Mohammed, Jason Holder, F Allen, Romario Shepherd, Alzarri Joseph, Akeal Hosein.
Sri Lanka is not going to be too worried about losing the T20 series. It was always expected to lose ad missing some key players did not make things easier. The ODI series, though, is one that they would expect to challenge the West Indies in.
Their strength is their spin-attack and we think the emergence of Wanindu Hasaranga is brilliant for them. He gave run at under five runs an over in the T20 series, a remarkable stat, and is going to be hard to get away here as well.
Hasarnga is likely to have support from Lakshan Sandakan for this match.
Dushmanth Chameera, Angelo Matthews, and maybe Nuwan Pradeep are likely to be the players that take up the fast bowling duties.
Sri Lanka’s batting is going to be considerably stronger for the ODI series. Dimuth Karunaratne has joined the squad and will be available while Pathum Nissanka has made an immediate impact as well.
Danushka Gunathilaka, Oshada Fernando, Dinesh Chandimal, Angelo Matthews, Niroshan Dickwella, Dasun Shanaka, and Thisara Perera are likely to be apart of the batting lineup.
Sri Lanka has a pretty good squad to pick from and the surface could decide whether they go in with an extra spinner or a fast-bowling all-rounder.
Dinesh Chandimal, Dimuth Karunaratne, Angelo Mathews, Pathum Nissanka, Danushka Gunathilaka, Ashen Bandara, Wanidu Hasaranga, Kamindu Mendis, Nuwan Pradeep, PVD Chameera, Lakshan Sandakan.
The team that wins the toss is going to want to bat first and get a good total on the board. 248 is the highest ever total chased on this ground and so it appears as if batting first is a big advantage.

The weather conditions in Antigua are very good for cricket. There is very little chance of rain forecast and so we should be able to enjoy a complete uninterrupted encounter. The pitch at the Sir Vivan Richards Stadium is known to be pretty quick in comparison to some of the others in the region.
This usually translates to plenty of runs bring hit and a fast pace of the game. The spinners will get some help but may have to rely on the bounce more than turn to get their wickets.
A score of around 250 seems to be par batting first.
We are going to back the tourists in this game. Sri Lanka’s spinners are going to have a lot many more overs to press their advantage against the West Indian batsmen. The Sri Lankan batting has also been strengthened for this match and so that is another plus to be considered. Traditionally, West Indies has found the going a bit tough in the 50 over format in the last decade or so.
Bet on Sri Lanka to win.
Our Favorite Bets
Any Player to Score A Century in the Match - Yes ($2.00) (Betway)
The conditions are going to be pretty good for batting and it is easy to see that one of the players gets in and goes on to get a century. This bet has a lot better chance of paying off if Sri Lanka bats first. Considering that you can double your money and looking at the kind of batsmen on both teams, you can definitely consider this bet.
Sri Lanka Top Bowler - Wanindu Hasaranga ($3.25) (Betway)
Hasaranga was unstoppable against the West Indian batsmen in the T20 series and he is going to come into this match full of confidence. He has an excellent googly that traps people in front of the wicket. The West Indian batsmen may try to play him out but that could be difficult if they are chasing a large total. A slightly higher-risk bet but one that is well worth considering.
