Apart from one win in the T20Is, Sri Lanka's recent run is definitely not worth remembering. They have struggled, to say the least, in all of the away matches they have played of late and a few of the reasons for that have been pretty unfortunate. Putting those factors behind, Sri Lanka have managed to show glimpses of brilliance, but those glimpses have unluckily not been enough for them.
In a bid to get one consolation win over West Indies in this ongoing series, Sri Lanka will take the field for the one final time on this tour. West Indies, on the other hand, have already won the series and might experiment a bit as far as their team combination is concerned. We expect this match to be a lot closer than the other two have been. The match is to be played at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua, on 14th March 2021.
Barring one poor outing in this tour, West Indies have done exceedingly well. Even though they lack experience in the specialist bowling department, they have done well to overcome that limitation. Even though batting has grabbed all the eyeballs for spectacular performances, the bowlers have done splendidly in setting up the matches for the batsmen.
In the two matches gone so far, West Indies' openers have been terrific. Shai Hope and Evin Lewis have already had a century each and the lowest personal score for a West Indies' opener is 65 this series. Apart from the openers, West Indies have an explosive middle-order consisting of Kieron Pollard, Nicholas Pooran, and Darren Bravo. Additionally, they have the services of Jason Holder and Fabian Allen, who both add depth to the batting without taking anything away from the bowling.
On paper, there could not be a more complete team that West Indies currently have. They play the ODI game in a way similar to how they play the shortest version of the game. In the series so far, we haven't really seen them show any concrete vulnerability that Sri Lankans can capitalize upon. The only thing that the hosts might have been worried about before the series started was their bowling, but the way the bowlers have done so far, it is not going to be easy for the Sri Lankans to get past them.
Evin Lewis, Shai Hope, Nicholas Pooran, Darren Bravo, Kieron Pollard, F Allen, Jason Holder, Jason Mohammed, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Anderson Phillip.
Sri Lanka have struggled in recent times for some reasons that have not been under their control. In this tour as well, Lahiru Kumara could not make the squad as he tested positive for Covid-19. Now, with the team already down 2-0 in the series, Angelo Mathews is flying back home for personal reasons. However, they'll now have the services of Dasun Shanaka available and he can make a big difference in both departments of the game.
The good thing from Sri Lanka's perspective is that even though they have had rough times, the players have shown a lot of fight and courage. We saw them win the T20I last week, but that win was Sri Lanka's only win since December 2020. Despite a poor string, Sri Lanka have a lot of positives to look forward to. Danushka Gunathilaka's two splendid knocks are certainly some good signs for Sri Lanka. The rewards may not come in now, but if he continues to bat like this, Sri Lanka will certainly be a tough side to beat once all their players are available.
On paper, Sri Lanka have a decent side, even without a few of their regular players being unavailable. There is a lack of experience, but there is no dearth of skill and talent. Going into the next game, a lot will depend upon how their batsmen other than Gunathilaka do. If they are able to contribute better, Sri Lanka may well script an upset here before flying back home.
Danushka Gunathilaka, Dimuth Karunaratne, Pathum Nissanka, Dinesh Chandimal, Ashen Bandara, Lakshan Sandakan, Thisara Perera, Wanidu Hasaranga, Dasun Shanaka, Suranga Lakmal, Asitha Fernando.
There has been a clear gap between how the two teams have performed in the series and it will take a colossal effort from Sri Lanka to bridge that gap. With Angelo Mathews also not available, Sri Lanka are certainly light on experience. They are prone to cracking in pressure-cooker situations and that is exactly what happened in the first two ODIs of the series. For that reason and the fact that West Indies appear to be a better team on all accounts, West Indies should cruise to a win in this upcoming encounter.
