West Indies Women

West Indies Women participated in the recently concluded Tri-Series, pitching them against India Women and hosts themselves, and it has given them ample opportunities to acclimatize to the conditions. However, they will have to play through their skins to achieve a top-2 finish in this difficult group.

Hayley Matthews, who took over the reins of the team from Stafanie Taylor last year, will be leading the team here. She has selected a squad that has a mixture of experience and youth and will be hoping to reap the benefits.

Bowling has been one of the biggest strengths for the West Indies Women in the past year and they will be depending on veterans including Afy Fletcher, Shakera Selman, and Stafanie Taylor to put up a good performance with the ball. The latter hasn’t played in the shortest format since July 2021 due to injuries but will hope to be completely fit before what will be her last T20 World Cup.

The team has also brought in two all-rounders from the U-19 squad. Zaida James brings in a left-arm option in the spin department and can also hit the ball well, while DJenaba Joseph is excellent in the middle order. West Indies Women’s high point came in 2016 when they lifted the T20 title for the first time and will be hoping to emulate that once again. 

England Women

England Women won the inaugural T20 World Cup held in 2009, and since then, have managed to reach the finals on 3 occasions but have failed to clear the final hurdle. In the 2020 edition too, they made it to the semifinals but were defeated at the hands of India Women.

The team will be led by Heather Knight, who is known for her explosive batting and finishing skills in the middle order. Alice Capsey, who suffered an injury last year, has been recalled into the squad and she will further bolster the middle order with her all-round capabilities.

Danni Wyatt is expected to open the batting along with Lauren Winfield-Hill or Amy Jones. Veteran seamer Kate Cross has been handed a recall but since she hasn’t played in the shortest format since the end of 2019, her form may be a cause for concern. Nevertheless, England has some of the best bowlers in the business, including Katherine Sciver-Brunt, Sophie Ecclestone, and Sarah Glenn, and they will be banking on them to defend even low targets.

Nat Sciver-Brunt was named the ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year in 2022 thanks to her superb all-round performance in the World Cup as well as in the test series against South Africa Women and will be hoping to carry forward that form here too.
