Worcestershire Rapids surprised one and all by winning the title in 2018, but a similar performance in 2019 proved that their title win was not a fluke. They have had terrific runs in the last two editions of the tournament and will be looking to go the distance in this edition of the T20 Blast.
They play their second match of the tournament against Northamptonshire, who will be itching to fare better than they did last year. Going by the performance of the two sides in the recent past, Worcestershire Rapids appears to have an edge. Northamptonshire, however, has some talented players at its disposal and should not be walk-overs. Which way will the match go? We will know soon. The match between the two teams is to be played on 29th August at New Road, Worcester.
Worcestershire Rapids are a complete side even without their overseas players and their run in the last two seasons proves that. The Rapids had a tricky season last year where they had to struggle a bit to qualify for the playoffs, but once Moeen Ali was available, the Rapids appeared to be a completely different unit. Rapids defeated Nottinghamshire in the semi-final but lost to Sussex in the grand finale of the tournament.
Although Moeen Ali didn't play many matches for the Rapids, he did have a vital role in Worcestershire's qualification. Moeen Ali featured in only half the total matches his side played last year but scored 365 runs. He was a vital cog in the wheel last year and is likely to be so this year as well, but with England hosting Australia and Pakistan and then IPL to follow, Ali is unlikely to feature in the playing eleven.
Besides Moeen Ali, Riki Wessels batting at the helped Worcestershire Rapids score tall totals with consistency. He scored a total of 461 runs at a fantastic strike-rate as he topped the batting charts for Worcestershire in 2019. With the kind of bowling Worcestershire has, the absence of Ali should not be felt in the bowling department. The likes of Ed Barnard, Pat Brown, and Wayne Parnell are seasoned players and will be difficult to score against. In 2019 as well, they were not only the most frugal sides in the death, but also fared pretty well in picking wickets too.
All in all, Worcestshire is one of the better-balanced sides in the tournament and the absence of overseas contingent should not affect them much. Moeen Ali, once back, will be an invaluable asset for them, but they are likely to do good without him as well. Getting past Worcestershire would definitely take some effort from any team facing them.

Even without the overseas contingent, Northamptonshire is rich in fire-power with the bat. Their top-order consists of players like Paul Stirling, Richard Levi, and Adam Rossington, who all are known for their ability to sent the ball flying. Had it not been for the pandemic, they would be having Kieron Pollard at their disposal. Not to be.
Northamptonshire had a decent campaign last year, but did not qualify for the playoffs. They missed the playoffs train so narrowly that a couple of results in their favor in the matches that went close could have been enough to push them into the knockouts.
On paper, Northamptonshire appears to be a terrific batting unit. Paul Stirling and Adam Rossington have been in terrific touch and will be looking to carry that into this tournament. Joshua Cobb has been around with that club for quite some time now and his experience of being with the team is going to be of immense value. Along with his experience, he brings his all-round skills to the table and his wily captaincy will be an added bonus for Northamptonshire.
The areas where Northamptonshire appears to be a bit short are their bowling and to some extent, someone who can play a sheet-anchor role should situation demands it. Their batting could be dangerous to deal with on good batting surfaces, but it might struggle on surfaces that required batsmen to apply themselves before going after the bowling. Having said that, if their bowlers do well in the tournament, Northamptonshire should do well not just in the next match, but also in the matches to follow.
Richard Levi, PR Stirling, Josh Cobb, Adam Rossington, Alex Wakely, Saif Zaib, Tom Sole, Graeme White, Ben Sanderson, Nathan Buck, Brandon Glover.
Even though the rain is unlikely to have an impact in the upcoming match, there are advantages of batting second. With surface likely to get better with time, batting in the second innings should be easier. Also, as the pitch has been under the covers, there will be a bit of uncertainty regarding it. Both captains would not want to take any chances whatsoever, and are, therefore expected to elect to field first after winning the toss.

Most first-day matches in the tournament were washed-out due to the inclement weather conditions and that certainly puts more focus on the forecast for Saturday. Much to everyone's delight, the weather is expected to improve dramatically over the course of two days and there are negligible chances of rain. The surface at Worcester is known to be reasonably good to bat on and we should see a sporting encounter with something there for batting and bowling both. We expect there to be some early assistance for the quick bowlers and batting will get increasingly easier with every passing minute. The team batting first should, therefore, be looking to put a total of at least 175 runs on the board.

With rain likely to have a telling impact this season, the importance of each win is significant. All teams in the competition would like to gather as many points in the early stages to have an easy second half in the tournament. There's no doubt that Northamptonshire has a potent batting unit and can topple any team on their day. However, Worcestershire has a better recent record and a terrific bowling attack, which is expected to thrive in these conditions. For those as well as the other reasons stated above, Worcestershire Rapids should emerge on top in this upcoming contest.
