About the Match
Worcestershire will host Sussex in their final match of this season before the two teams head back home. With 10 points in their bag, the hosts are very happy with their performance, especially with some recent team additions that won them important matches. The visitors on the other hand are placed at the 4th position with 12 points. Though both the teams are out of the race for possible spots in the final four, they both are riding high on their recent victories.
A brilliant team effort saw Worcestershire post a huge win against Warwickshire by a margin of 140 runs. Moeen Ali put up a valiant effort with 114 runs off 85 balls that shaped his team’s victory early on in the game. His 7th one-day century came off just 75 balls in a seasoned performance that sunk the opponents. Mitchell also played an important role as he contributed 60 runs off 49 balls. Later on, Kervezee supported Ali with his knock of 58 off 63 balls, as they put up a partnership of 113 for the 5th wicket. This brilliant innings of 291 runs from the batsmen, was well defended by the bowlers in the latter half of the game. Incredible bowling by Graeme Cessford, who took 4 wickets, astonished the Warwicks with his figures of 3-2 in just 18 balls. Moeen and Mitchell’s all-round performance came handy when they took 2 and 3 wickets respectively, destructing any remaining hopes for the opponents. The team has well utilised its strengths and are looking forward to repeat their performance.
Their win against Nottinghamshire has boosted their morale and they will go into this match with a positive attitude. Captain Ed Joyce who has been in great form, with his 123 runs against the Notts will want to finish off with another superb innings. Along with Wright, who posted 62 off 42, Joyce built a strong partnership of 112 runs. Later on, Machan maintained the tempo by contributing 51 runs off 28 balls. With a target of 290, Sussex kept going strong and were successful. The bowlers did exceptionally well too with Hatchett taking 3 wickets, Yardy and Liddle 1 wicket each. This however, didn’t stop the Notts from reaching 290. It took a captain’s knock and good support from down the order that brought the team home. This will be a match that Sussex will definitely look forward to.
Though both the teams are apart by 2 points, their performances go on to prove that they are equally matched. Moeen Ali, Mitchell, Kervezee and Cessford are a surprise package but so are Ed Joyce, Wright, Machan and Hatchett. Which of these players will continue to display their strengths and earn glory for their team? It will be a close contest for both the teams. However, I feel that Worcestershire will once again shine with all-round performances and win this match against Sussex.
