About the Match
Worcestershire plays Warwickshire on August 19th at Birmingham and both the teams are looking for redemption before they face group leaders Sussex and Northamptonshire respectively in their final games of the season. Worcestershire are just ahead with 8 points whereas Warwickshire has managed to bag only 6 points in the tournament so far. After failing to make it to the qualifiers, Warwickshire’s performance has only worsened, barring the recent win against Kent. Worcestershire on the other hand performed better and thought they had lost to Kent earlier; they managed to triumph in the match against the Notts. As it is impossible for them to make it to the semi-finals, the men from Worcestershire are looking for a grace-saving win here.
Chopra and Porterfield put up their best performances this year by posting an opening stand of 134 in 24 overs against the Netherlands. However, with absolutely no support from the middle order, the team lost the plot and suffered a 5-run defeat at the hands of the opponents. The bowlers tried their best to take wickets at regular intervals. However, but for Javid and Clarke who not only took wickets but also contributed to the scoreboard, the other bowlers couldn’t step up their game. Resting key bowlers this season was perhaps not the best strategy to adapt. The recent win against Kent, where the batsmen began to find their form, brought some respite. However, it is up to Chopra and Porterfield to build a strong partnership and post a good total for the bowlers to defend.
Their recent win against Nottinghamshire was only their 4th win of the year. However, Worcestershire are looking to up their game and finish in style. Captain Mitchell and MM Ali built the innings by putting up an opening partnership of 58 and Mitchell was later well supported by Kervezee, who hit a run-a- ball of 31 runs. Ali was magnificent with the ball and took 3 wickets giving away only 28 runs. Shantry and Morris earned two wickets each. The bowling squad proved to be deadly for the opponents who failed to reach the target of 220 posted by the Worcestershire. The team needs to repeat their superb performance in all departments of the game to emerge victorious once again.
Worcestershire are better placed than Warwickshire in terms of points as well as individual performances from team members. Sitting at the bottom of the table after an entire season of humiliating defeat, Warwickshire will play for their honor and look for something to cheer about. Worcestershire on the other hand, placed at 5th position, 4 points behind Sussex, will still want to battle it out for a place in the final four. Will they succeed in this next to the impossible mission or stumble once again? This will be answered tomorrow. Though Warwickshire is expected to play wisely and put up a good fight, I favor Worcestershire, who has done well throughout the season and is better placed than its opponents.
