We still have a couple of matches to go in the Momentum One Day Cup and the situation already is clear. The top four teams are already confirmed and so are the semi-final draws. One of the remaining two dead-rubbers is to be played between Warriors and Cobras. While the Warriors have already qualified for the playoffs and are likely to play against Lions in the semi-final, the Cobras no longer have hopes to qualify. The two sides are set to meet each other on Saturday, 14th March at Buffalo Park, East London.
Warriors finally managed to sneak into the playoffs with a much-needed win in their previous match wherein they just got past the Dolphins. The win gave them four important points and pushed them ahead of the Titans and the Knights on the ladder. Although it is no longer consequential, the Warriors are placed at the third spot on the ladder with 19 points to their name in nine matches. They have a decent net run-rate of -0.095.
Batting first against the Dolphins, the Warriors got off to a pretty solid start with Edward Moore and Matt Breetzke adding 51 runs for the first wicket. With brief little cameos and partnerships, the Warriors continued to march, albeit a bit nervously towards the total they hoped to get. With a blinder from Jade de Klerk towards the end, the Warriors ended up scoring 293 runs, a total which proved to be just enough for the Warriors.
Defending 293 wasn't going to be easy against the Dolphins who had most of their batsmen in red-hot form. Dolphins even got off to a pretty good start with three of their top-four batsmen scoring a personal score on 40 or more. However, it was a terrific performance by Warriors' bowlers later in the day as the Warriors came back from behind to entirely dismantle Dolphins for a total of 287 runs. Stefan Tait was the pick of their bowlers as he returned with exceptional figures of 2 for 46 in his 10 overs.
Edward Moore, Matthew Breetzke, Lesiba Ngoepe, Yaseen Vallie, Marco Marais, Sinethemba Qeshile, Jade de Klerk, Ayabulela Gqamane, SSB Magala, Glenton Stuurman, Stefan Tait.
Cobras started off pretty well in the tournament and were in contention to qualify for the playoffs for most part, but poor performance in their last few matches has rendered them short of the qualification mark. As of now, they are placed at the bottom-spot with eight points and a net run-rate of -0.767. Regardless of the outcome of the upcoming game Cobras are guaranteed to finish with the wooden-spoon.
Cobras are coming off yet another poor performance in the batting as they lost to Titans in a rain-curtailed encounter. Batting first on a pretty good surface after the match was shortened to 32-overs a side, the Titans managed to put just 164 runs on the board. Barring Pieter Malan, who scored 67 off 79, none of their batsmen looked in control as Cobras finished with 164 for 7 in 32 overs.
Rarely do the total in the range of 160 are enough in twenty over cricket and this was a 32-over match and defending the total was never going to be easy. Even though the likes of Dane Piedt and Jason Smith bowled their heart out, the total was too little to defend on the kind of surface it was. Piedt returned with the impressive figures of 2 for 23 in his seven overs.
Pieter Malan, Tayo Walbrugh, Zubayr Hamza, Jonathan Bird, JF Smith, Aviwe Mgijima, Mangaliso Mosehle, Dane Piedt, Lizaad Williams, Thando Ntini, Dane Paterson.
There's no implication of the result of this match and we can expect Warriors to rest a couple of their key players before the business end of the tournament. Also, this match would also act as a dress-reharsal for their semi-final clash against the Dolphins. Cobras, on the other hand, haven't shown anything speactacular in their recent matches and the possibility of them winning the upcoming match looks remote. Considering the two sides on paper and their respective performances in the tournament, placing your money on a Warriors' win should be the way to go in this dead-rubber contest.
