With Knights' win over Cape Cobras, the Momentum One Day Cup is alive and kicking, at least for the Knights. They moved upto the fourth spot, separated by just one spot from the Warriors and are in a pretty good spot, as far as qualification is concerned. With business-end of the tournament visible up ahead, the Warriors would need to buckle up and register a couple of wins to be certain of a qualification spot. However, they do not have an easy match up next. They are set to play against Dolphins in their next match, which is to be played on 8th March at Buffalo Park, East London. Dolphins have been the best team in the tournament and beating them isn't going to be easy.
Warriors have been in the middle of the points table since the beginning of the tournament. The margins of their wins haven't been high and the margin of their losses haven't been high either. With 15 points to their name in eight matches and a net run-rate of 0.128, the Warriors seem to have done well. However, they would need to register at least one more win to have any chance to qualify for the next round.
The Warriors are coming into this match on the back of a superb win over the Titans and that win would have given them plenty of confidence. Chasing a total of 331, which was never going to be easy, Warriors worked hard right from the first ball and their never-say-die attitude ensured that they got home. Edward Moore, Matt Breetzke, and Lesiba Ngoepe were the pick of their batsmen and scored more than 200 runs combined. Edward Moore played a captain's knock and scored a run-a-ball 107.
Earlier with the ball, their bowlers failed to contain the Titans. One can argue that it was a terrific surface to bat on and the Titans batted brilliantly, but the Warriors' bowlers lacked accuracy and discipline to say the least. Ed Moore tried eight bowlers on the day and barring three, all conceded at an economy rate of over six. Andrew Birch was the pick of their bowlers as he picked up a wickets for 40 runs in his nine overs.
Marco Marais, Edward Moore, Matthew Breetzke, Lesiba Ngoepe, Yaseen Vallie, Ayabulela Gqamane, Onke Nyaku, SSB Magala, Andrew Birch, Stefan Tait, Jade de Klerk.
With 30 points in eight matches, Dolphins are miles ahead of everyone in the competition. Lions had a chance to level the competition, but Dolphins proved to be too good for them.
Chasing a total of 244, the Dolphins never seemed worried and did it with significant ease. Although they took 49.3 overs to seal the deal, it never felt that Dolphins were behind in the game. It was largely because their bowlers did a terrific job of containing the Lions. Robbie Frylinck, Okuhle Cele, and Senuran Muthusamy did a terrific job as they picked up a couple of wickets each that did not allow Lions' innings to flourish.
With just 244 runs to chase down, the pressure was always on the Lions' bowlers to defend and Dolphins went about their business pretty calmly. Almost everyone contributed for them and although they lost a couple of quick wickets towards the end, they won the match without any fuss. Marques Ackerman top-scored for them with a brilliant 54 off 65 deliveries. The 70-run partnership between Muthusamy and Frylinck eventually got them home with four wickets in hand.
Grant Roelofsen, Sarel Erwee, C Chetty, Khaya Zondo, Marques Ackerman, Senuran Muthusamy, R Frylinck, P Subrayen, Sibonelo Makhanya, Okuhle Cele, Keith Dudgeon.
We are almost already into the business end of the tournament with the hopes of teams hinging on the results of every match. While the Dolphins have already qualified for the playoffs, the Warriors need to win at least one of their remaining two. Therefore, they are likely to come in hard in this encounter, but considering the way Dolphins have done in the tournament so far, things aren't going to be easy for the Warriors. A Dolphins' win is certainly the most probable outcome in the upcoming encounter.
