About the Match

After a humdrum middle phase in the ongoing Momentum One Day Cup, things are beginning to get interesting as far as the qualification scenarios are concerned. Dolphins' back to back losses have not only put their qualification chances in jeopardy but has also brought Lions and Knights back into the contention. Almost every game hereon is do-or-die for many teams including the match which is to be played on 20th March at Port Elizabeth between Warriors and Dolphins. The winner of this upcoming fixture will seal its spot in the playoffs whereas, for the losing team, the road to the playoffs will get further more difficult.

Match Preview

Warriors

With 18 points in 8 matches, the Warriors are sitting more comfortably than any other team which is yet to qualify for the playoffs. However, it could change very quickly over the next couple of days. A loss for Warriors in their next match will push them down to third spot and thanks to their inferior net run-rate, they could easily be displaced by the likes of Cobras, Knights, and Lions if those other teams are able to get a few favorable results.

Warriors had a terrific start to the tournament and were reigning the points table at one stage, but a poor display in the last three matches has left them in a spot of bother. They are coming into the match with three back to back losses behind them and finding their way back to the winning path will be a challenge for them.

It was a rare collective batting failure which was responsible for their embarrassing defeat in the last match. Batting first on a surface which didn't appear to have any demons, none of their top-order batsmen were able to apply themselves as they lost half their side in only the eleventh over. Had it not been for Marais, who scored 42 off 36 deliveries, they would've bundled out for an even less score.

Defending 121 was next to impossible, but their bowlers did well to make a match out of it. They got rid of three Knights within the first five overs, but just when the likes of Birch and Sipmala were looking threatening, RS Second played a brilliant innings to guide Knights home with five wickets in hand.

Dolphins

Dolphins got off to a solid start in the tournament, winning all of their first three matches, but they managed to win just one out of their next five matches. It was just a couple of days ago when they lost against Knights in a rain-curtailed encounter.

It is a jam-packed tournament and fatigue and fitness can be a dictating factor, more so when the team is struggling to get the desired results. Their bowlers looked a little fatigued against Knights as they gave away 208 runs bowling first at Kimberley. None of their bowlers conceded at an economy rate of less than three while Bosch, Maharaj, Muthuswamy, and Cele had at least a wicket against their name, Muthuswamy had two, Subrayen and Mungroo leaked plenty of runs without any success. The two bowlers together gave away 69 runs off the five overs combined which turned out to be a match-defining point.

Which chasing 209 in 25 overs wasn't an overly difficult task, the Dolphins needed a good start - which their top-order failed to provide. Apart from Erwee, who scored 38 off 31 deliveries, none of their top-three batsmen got to double-digits. Khaya Zondo combined well with Erwee and got the chase back on track, but the wicket of Erwee in the 11th over triggered a collapse from which the Dolphins could never recover. Dolphins were eventually dismantled for 150, losing the match by 58 runs.

Dolphins Starting Lineup

VBV Jaarsveld, Sarel Erwee, Marques Ackerman, DJ Vilas, Khaya Zondo, Sibonelo Makhanya, Senuran Muthusamy, K Maharaj, P Subrayen, Eathan Bosch, Okuhle Cele.

Match Prediction

Warriors and Dolphins are the two teams with worst net run-rate in the season which speaks volumes about the nature of results they've had thus far in the tournament. Warriors thumped Dolphins when the two teams locked horns earlier in the tournament and they'll certainly take the confidence into the next match. Both the will be itching to get back to the winning ways after being on the receiving end in their respective matches in the past few days. While it is hard to choose between the sides considering the recent form, the Warriors appear to be a better-balanced side between the two. Playing at home is likely to play to their advantage and therefore we think that the Warriors will emerge on top in the upcoming match and become the second team of the season to seal a playoff berth.
