We are just about at the beginning of the second leg of the Vitality T20 Blast and it promises to be an exciting one. The North Group, in particular, is pretty nicely posted with tough competition at the top of the ladder. Placed in the bottom half though, Birmingham Bears and Glamorgan will be striving hard to get some wins in the second half of the league stage.
They are set to take on each other in the upcoming North Group encounter and its a pretty important match for both sides. A win for Glamorgan will keep them in the race for the semis while a win for the Bears will likely push them to the second spot on the points table. Considering the stakes involved, we expect both teams to come out all guns blazing in the upcoming match, which is to be played on 11th September 2020 at Edgbaston Cricket Ground, Birmingham.
Birmingham Bears seem to be following the same trajectory as in the last edition of the tournament. Just like in 2019, Birmingham got off to a tremendous start, beating Glamorgan in the opening match, but failed to build on the momentum. As it stands, they have two wins to their name in five matches and are consequently placed at the fourth spot on the points table. While their position on the ladder is pretty decent, their net run-rate of -1.266 is something that they'd be concerned about going forward in the competition.
Given that they lost two matches consecutively after their first win, Birmingham Bears will be pretty happy with their win in the last match. The Bears defeated Somerset by a narrow margin of four runs in a rain-inflicted match.
Batting first under an overcast sky, Birmingham Bears got off to a worst possible start, losing two wickets inside the first two overs with just two runs on the board. Ed Pollock and Sam Hain brought some momentum and stability of their innings, but with the departure of Pollock, the Bears met another speed-breaker. It was the innings of Sam Hain, who scored 55 off 31, that took Warwickshire Bears to a challenging total. Will Rhodes played a useful cameo of 21 runs and held one end to allow Sam Hain to play his natural game.
While the Bears' score wasn't much for a 12-over game, it proved to be just enough for their bowlers to defend. Thanks to the DLS method, Somerset were given an adjusted total of 125 runs to chase down and the Bears' bowlers toiled hard to restrict the potent Somerset batting. Even though almost all Bears' bowlers were costly, they kept chipping away with the wickets at regular intervals.
Tim Bresnan and Olly Stone set the tone with a wicket each in their respective opening overs, leaving Somerset at 14 for 2. The work done by the pair was taken forward by Harry Brookes, who eventually proved to be the pick of the bowlers, bowled exceedingly well, and returned with the figures of 2 for 29 in his three overs. However, it was the two-over spell from JB Lintott that turned the match on its head. Head bowled two miserly overs and picked up an important wicket of Lewis Gregory to push Somerset back. His two overs became the difference as Birmingham Bears eventually won the match by 4 runs.
All in all, Birmingham Bears seems to be a pretty good unit, but with their top-order not in form, Bears' over-reliance on Sam Hain is pretty apparent. Given the bowling they have, if their top-order can join the party, beating Bears can be a difficult task.
Ed Pollock, Dominic Sibley, Adam Hose, Sam Hain, Will Rhodes, Michael Burgess, Tim Bresnan, Henry Brookes, Olly Stone, Jacob Lintott, Jeetan Patel.
Glamorgan was one of the worst-performing teams last year and their campaign this year seems to be progressing in a similar direction. They got off to a flying start, beating Gloucestershire in their opening match, but have looked dismal since then. In a total of five matches so far, Glamorgan have three points, courtesy one win, and one wash-out.
Glamorgan are coming off a three-game losing streak and the break would have done a lot of good. In a tournament that was going at a quick pace, a short break will give them a chance to regroup and rethink their strategy going forward. Glamorgan's last match was against Northamptonshire, in which they faced a heavy defeat by eight wickets.
Batting first in the previous match, Glamorgan were actually in a pretty good position at once stage. They had put on 95 runs for 1 wicket and had eight overs to launch an assault on Northants' bowlers. However, once Balbirnie was dismissed, they failed to carry on the momentum and eventually finished with a total of just 160 runs on the board. Andrew Balbirnie top-scored for them with his 58 off 38 deliveries.
Glamorgan's woes so far have been mainly because of their late middle-order batting. While they have a pretty good unit at the top, they have lacked skills to finish the innings thus far. Their bowling, however, looks to be doing pretty well. Prem Sisodiya and Andrew Salter have done well in keeping the opponents quiet. They have Marchant de Lange to lead the pace department and his presence should give them pretty good comfort.
All in all, Glamorgan seems to be a decent unit albeit with a few voids. They earlier looked a tad too over-reliant on Chris Cooke, which now seems to be taken care of with Andrew Balbirnie finding form. If they can finish their innings well on top of the good starts, Glamorgan could be a tough team to deal with.
Nicholas Selman, David Lloyd, Andy Balbirnie, Chris Cooke, Owen Morgan, Callum Taylor, Andrew Salter, Marchant de Lange, Timm van der Gugten, Prem Sisodiya, Ruaidhri Smith.

This is an important fixture for the two sides who have struggled in the tournament so far. Glamorgan will be desperate to emerge on top in the upcoming encounter as a loss here will put them on the brink of an early elimination. Bears, too, will be looking to put their campaign back on track and move to the top half of a table with a win. On the basis of performances in their respective previous matches and the on-paper combination, Birmingham Bears appear to be better placed to emerge on top in the upcoming encounter.
