The battle to stay at the top of the table is getting increasingly intense with every passing game in Vitality T20 Blast. Now that each team will have only ten games to get as many points as possible, no team can afford to get to a slow start. Gloucestershire is all set to take on Birmingham Bears in the upcoming Central Group encounter.
Gloucestershire and Birmingham Bears are tied at three points each with only net run-rate to separate the two teams. Even though Birmingham Bears have a game to play before they take on Gloucestershire, this match would be of significant importance for both sides. We expect both of them to come out hard at each other and a cracker of a contest is certainly on the cards. The match will be played at Edgbaston Cricket Ground, Birmingham, on 2nd September.
Like Gloucestershire, Birmingham Bears registered a terrific win in their previous match and will be looking to add two more points to their tally. However, they have a match against Northamptonshire and a lot will depend on how they fare against the table-toppers. As it stands, the Bears are placed at the second spot on the ladder with three points to their name.
In their previous match, Birmingham Bears were all over Glamorgan in all three departments of the game. Chasing a modest total of 140, Birmingham Bears were absolutely methodical in their approach and didn't leave even a slightest of gap for Glamorgan to put a foot in the door. All of their batsmen played useful innings after their bowlers put together a disciplined effort in the first innings to keep Glamorgan to a total of 140.
On paper, Birmingham Bears certainly have a team that oozes class. Almost all of their batsmen are technically sound and with Ed Pollock available at the top of the order, they have a fine amalgamation of experience and exuberance. They produced a terrific performance in their opening game and will be looking to repeat the feat as the tournament progresses.
The Bears had pretty much the same team and a similar start last year, but they weren't able to continue their winning run. They'd be a bit more careful this season and we can expect them to step on the gas pedal whenever required. If they end up playing to their potential, there are not many teams in the tournament that will be able to get past this experience Bears' lineup.
Ed Pollock, Adam Hose, Sam Hain, Will Rhodes, Michael Burgess, Dan Mousley, Tim Bresnan, Jacob Lintott, Henry Brookes, Olly Stone, Jeetan Patel.
With one win and loss from three matches, Gloucestershire is placed at the third spot on the points table. They have a net run-rate of 0.175, which is pretty good given that they have played only a couple of matches thus far.
Chris Dent proved to be a vital addition to the Gloucestershire lineup as his knock played a crucial role for Gloucestershire to get their first win of the tournament. Batting first, Gloucestershire's batsmen put together a terrific exhibition of batting with Chris Dent top-scoring. Dent's knock at the top of the order provided Gloucestershire's innings with the direction and the tempo.
Once Dent was dismissed, Miles Hammond and Ian Cockbain did a terrific job of keeping Gloucestershire's run-rate up to what it was when Dent was batting. Ryan Higgins and Jack Taylor provided Gloucestershire with a flourishing finish to top of a brilliant all-around batting effort.
Chasing a total of 197 is always a daunting task and Gloucs' bowlers and fielders ensured that it remained like that. While Matt Taylor was expensive early on, David Payne bowled in tight channels and got rid of dangerous-looking Hamish Rutherford in only the third over of the match, but not before putting Worcestershire in a good position. Worcestershire Rapids kept hitting Gloucestershire's bowlers hard and all-around the park, but the bowlers bowled with heart and were rewarded with wickets. Those wickets slowed down the pace of Worcestershire's innings. Tom Smith's bowling in the middle-overs proved to be instrumental as he not only restricted the flow of runs but also picked up two important wickets. He returned with the figures of 4-0-17-2. Payne was the most successful bowler for Gloucestershire with his figures reading 3 for 32 in four overs.
Gloucs have had two mixed results in the tournament so far. They were beaten by one of the weakest on-paper team and then went on to register a thumping win over last year's runners-up. Understandably, it was the lack of match practice that had an impact on their performance against Glamorgan. Gloucestershire would want to keep building on the momentum they got from their last win and if their players play as they did, it won't be surprising if Gloucs climbs to the top of their group.
Miles Hammond, Chris Dent, IA Cockbain, Ryan Higgins, Jack Taylor, James Bracey, George Scott, GLV Buuren, Tom Smith, David Payne, MD Taylor.
Although the surface is expected to get slower as the match progresses, the chances of rain having a part to play will even things out. Also, this is an evening game and dew can play a part as well. Considering those factors, the captain winning the toss will want to field first.

It's forecasted for rain all over England on Wednesday and the forecast is the same for Birmingham as well. Although the prediction is of slight showers, there can be an interruption in play and there are high chances of the DLS method coming into the picture. Also, the surface as Edgbaston generally tends to get slower in the second innings and the team chasing will have to be wary of that. Spinners are likely to have a better day as compared to the seamers. Given the surface and the conditions, the team batting first will be looking to put a total of at least 170 runs on the board.

It is the battle between the teams that Glamorgan lost to and that Glamorgan defeated. Both sides have a well-balanced lineup and we expect it to be a cracker of a contest. On paper, Bears' bowling attack seems to be a tad better than Gloucestershire's and that could be a crucial factor in this match. Additionally, the Bears are playing at home and will have the advantage of knowing the conditions better. For those reasons, we think that the Bears are better placed to emerge on top in the upcoming fixture.
