Birmingham Bears' campaign this year would go in history as one of the most beautiful turnaround stories. They were dismal last year, winning only three out of fourteen matches, and have made a solid comeback by producing a brilliant run thus far. They would love to qualify for the playoffs from here, but they'd need an additional point for that. They are set to take on Northamptonshire in their upcoming encounter, which is to be played at Edgbaston Cricket Ground, Birmingham, on 20th September 2020. Northamptonshire, too, are still in the race for a playoff spot and will be looking to register a win here. Stakes will be running high and adrenaline will be pumping in this virtual knockout fixtures. This is going to be a cracker of a contest.
Birmingham Bears have had a see-saw kind of tournament so far. They are currently sitting on the second spot on the Central Group points table but would need a win to maintain their supremacy. Their poor net run-rate of -0.641 would prove to be a huge deterrent should they lose this upcoming match to Northamptonshire.
They are coming off a superb win over Worcestershire Rapids, defeating them by 16 runs and taking a huge stride towards a place in the knockouts. Batting first on a cold, dry night at Edgbaston Cricket Ground, Birmingham Bears scored a solid total of 179 for 6. The total was assured by Sam Hain, who smashed 61 off 33. He got ample support from Rob Yates and Dan Mousley. Mousley, who had an experience of only one match before this one, appeared to be having nerves of steel as he combined with Sam Hain to rebuild the Bears' innings. Hain and Mousley together added 80 off 53 for the fifth wicket, taking Bears from a spot of both to a position to dictate terms.
While 179 was a challenging total, it was not imposing by any means. Solid knocks by Hamish Rutherford and Brett D'Oliveira kept Rapids in the hunt, but Bears' aggressive tactics in the middle overs eventually prevailed over Rapids' tactics. Bears were looking to pick wickets up throughout the twenty overs and that proved to be crucial as Rapids failed to close the match despite having a manageable required run-rate even at the back-end of their innings. Olly Stones and Harry Brookes contributed with a couple of wickets each.
Birmingham Bears haven't been clinical in the tournament so far, but they've done just enough to keep themselves afloat. On paper, they have a superb side with experience oozing right through. They are coming off a superb win in their previous match and given the experience they have, they shouldn't be an easy to crack team in the upcoming fixture.

There couldn't have been worse downslide for any team in the tournament than Northamptonshire have had. At the halfway mark, they were cruising and a spot in the playoffs looked like a certainty. However, four back to back losses in their previous four matches have put them in a spot of bother. They are currently placed at the fourth spot on the points table with a net run-rate of -0.012.
Northamptonshire were once again listless in a match they were so desperate to win. Batting first against Somerset, Northamptonshire managed to put a total of only 140 runs on the board, with Cobb top-scoring for them with a well-made 49. Northamptonshire's innings perfectly summed up their season so far. They started off in a fantastic manner, putting up 82 runs on the board at the halfway stage, but struggle to keep moving at the same pace, let alone accelerate. Paul Stirling holed out to long-off, Adam Rossington holed-out to long-on, and the rest of their bowlers followed the suite. They slowly limped their way to a total that was not enough on a good batting deck.
With the ball as well, they had Somerset in a bit of spot of bother, picking up two important wickets in the powerplay. However, Northants' bowlers lacked penetration in the middle-overs as Somerset cruised to the total with seven wickets in hand and two wickets to spare. They had bowlers who bowled tight and frugally, but they needed someone to pick wickets in the middle overs.
The loss left Northamptonshire's fate in not only their own hands but also in the hands of Somerset. Not only they'd want to register a win in this upcoming match but would also need Somerset to lose their match. Having said that, Northamptonshire would be looking to pull off a favorable result in this game and take it from there. They certainly have a good side on paper and they'd need an inspirational effort from someone. If that happens, beating Northants will once again get very difficult.
Richard Levi, PR Stirling, Josh Cobb, Adam Rossington, Rob Keogh, Saif Zaib, Luke Procter, Tom Taylor, Graeme White, Nathan Buck, Ben Sanderson.

Being considered as a virtual pre-quarter-final, this match certainly holds huge importance for both sides. Birmingham Bears are coming off a superb win in their previous match and will be brimming with confidence. Contrary to that, Northamptonshire are coming off four straight losses and will be desperate for a win here. On paper, Northamptonshire are a better team between the two and that is apparent from their run in the first half of the competition. The news of a squad member's positive Covid-19 test seems to have taken a toll on them. Considering the stakes involved, expect Northamptonshire to bounce back and be at their best in the upcoming match. Keeping that into consideration, a punt on Northants' win should be the way to go in the upcoming match.
