About the Match
Afghanistan won their second successive match of the series and is now within striking distance of securing yet another series win against Zimbabwe. Can the hosts fight back in the crucial third ODI?
3rd ODI preview
The first half of Zimbabwe’s chase began very smoothly and it looked like the recalled Solomon Mire, in the company of Craig Ervine, would guide Zimbabwe to a series equaling win. Unfortunately for Zimbabwe fans, what transpired was a collapse that showcased the lack of batting depth and experience in this batting lineup.
Hamilton Masakadza, Peter Moor, and Ryan Burl are all talented cricketers that seem to be performing much below their potential. The new chief of selectors, Tatenda Taibu, has set forth a policy of picking youngsters but it seems to have caused a lot of upheaval in the team’s morale as well.
It is difficult to see Zimbabwe come of out this spiral in the current circumstances and only an exceptional individual performance can change the outlook of this team.
Chatara and Ngarava continue to bowl well and impress with excellent support from Cremer. The Zimbabwe bowling effort has been let down by some shoddy batting that should have been able to take better advantage of the low scores Afghanistan has been restricted to.
Back Cremer to pick up the most wickets for Zimbabwe in the third match, while we would recommend sticking with Craig Ervine as the top scorer.
The total innings score could be a better value for betting if Zimbabwe bats first. We think a score between 170-200 would be a good score to bet on.
The Afghan players would be in high spirits after winning the first two matches and two of their players getting hefty IPL contracts as well. Rashid Khan, the extremely talented leg spinner, has been a real thorn in the side for Zimbabwe and could well prove to be the highest wicket taker once again.
He and Mohammad Nabi have been very difficult to get away in the middle overs and their ability to take wickets helps stifle any batting challenge that Zimbabwe attempts.
That being said, Afghanistan’s two wins have not been without their shortcomings. None of Afghanistan’s batsmen have really taken toll of Zimbabwe’s bowling, which has been disciplined but not really threatening.
The fielding effort also requires a lot of improvement and something that will hurt the teams as they come face to face with teams better than Zimbabwe. Mohammad Shahzad top scored in the second match with an aggressive 64 but it was Rahmat Khan’s 53 that impressed us more.
He is a player likely to play for Afghanistan for a long time and will only get better after exposure to better quality bowling.
We think Stankzai would be disappointed to miss out in the second match and could come back strongly to score the most runs in this match
. Back Afghanistan to score over 250 if they get the opportunity to bat first.
The Afghans should win this match with ease.
