ENG vs IRE Match Prediction - Aug 04, 2020

The third match of the ODI series between England and Ireland is about to start. The series has been decided 2-0, however, there is still a lot to play for. This series is the first that is going to be a part of the new ODI Super League which is going to decide which teams qualify for the 2023 World Cup. We are a long way from the end and who knows is the points of one match are going to matter or not.

Ireland has been terrible with the bat and although it has had England in trouble on a few occasions. It has not been able to come close to a win just yet.

England, on the other hand, would be a bit concerned about its own batting. They were 137 for 6 chasing 212 and could have been in real trouble had another wicket been lost. This next match could be a great opportunity to try out some more new players.

Can Ireland finally put together a decent batting performance? Will England slip-up while trying to give its bench a run?

England vs Ireland 3rd ODI 2020 is going to be played at the Rose Bowl, Southampton on the 4th of August 2020.

ENG vs IRE Team Previews

England

Jonny Bairstow smashed 82 off just 41 deliveries in the previous match. He was at his fluent best as he showed just he is regarded as one of the best in the business. His inning actually covered up a bit for England’s frailties with the bat.

For the second match in a row, Jason Roy, James Vince, and Tom Banton failed to make the most of their opportunities. Sam Billings followed up his fifty-plus score with another very good 46 not out as he shepherded England home.

Eoin Morgan and Moeen Ali fell without scoring. Ali was out to the short ball, an old weakness that is going to put the target on his back once more.

Liam Livingstone is in the squad as well and we hope to see him get a chance in this next match. He could come in place for Banton or even Vince.

There is no doubt that England’s batting is superior to Ireland. It’s batsmen, however, have not been playing anywhere close to their potential. If England gets a chance to bat first, we should be looking at a score of over 300 quite easily.

David Willey has been one of the biggest gainers in this series. He has picked up 7 wickets in the two matches he played and even scored a crucial 47 not out in the second match. He is going to be the most dangerous upfront after which Adil Rashid is going to pose the biggest threat to the Irish batsmen.

The depth in England’s squad and it's playing eleven allows it to win even when it plays cricket far worse than its best.

Ireland

Andrew Balbirnie expressed a lot of disappointment after the second successive match in which his team failed to bat well. England’s bowling is far from first-choice and Ireland would have expected more from its batsmen.

Is there anything that they can change in the matter of a few days, though?

We don’t think so. Ireland’s batting has been a problem for quite some time now. It has struggled in all forms of cricket but especially in ODI cricket. We are not sure why the management decided to push Kevin O'Brien down the order after he had shown some potential at the top of the order but that is a move that they could explore once more.

Balbirnie himself needs to take responsibility and start scoring runs. He bats in the top-3, which is the most important part of the batting order. He must play a long inning and set the tempo. The form of Curtis Campher has been excellent. He now has two fifties in a row. Ireland could gamble on sending him up the order and seeing if he can continue his impressive start to his ODI career.

Overall, though, there is no doubt that Ireland is struggling with the batting. They must hope that things become better from here on in.

Joshua Little bowled impressively and picked up three wickets. Curtis Campher also picked up two wickets to have the England batting in a bit of trouble. If someone like Simi Singh or Craig Young can up their game a little then Ireland’s bowling is not entirely without merit.

ENG vs IRE Toss Prediction

The team that wins the toss is going to want to bat first. We believe that this pitch is far too good to pass up an opportunity of batting first against a weak bowling attack.

Pitch and Conditions

The weather has been excellent in Southampton and that is expected to continue in this match as well. The pitches offered up so far have been excellent for batting. England will fancy nothing less than 300 if they get an opportunity to bat first.

The bowlers have been able to extract some decent bounce off the surface and that will be the same for this match too.

ENG vs IRE Betting Tips

England is very likely to win this match, there is no doubt about that. There is nothing great about this prediction nor is there too much value on betting on it. You can look for other more interesting bets in this match, however, backing Ireland to win as the underdog is not one of them.

Bet on England to win. (1.06 on Betway)

England’s opening partnerships have been a single digit in both the matches. Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow are very dangerous batsmen. On their day they can destroy the bowling and a score of 42.5 is not going to take them more than 5-6 overs to reach. However, their attacking style of play is also full of risk.

Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow are both ultra-attacking batsmen that could get out early.

Worth a punt.

Only bet on this if England bats first. If Ireland bats first, they may not be able to get a score that is large enough for the English batsmen to bat freely. It is going to take just a couple of good partnerships in the England inning to be able to win you this bet.

It is a bit of a risk, however, the return is worth it too.
