LPL Betting

There are five teams that are going to take part in the Lanka Premier League in 2020, and some pretty big T20 players from around the world are going to be a part of it. The format of the tournament is such that four out of the five teams are going to play the playoffs (two semi-finals and finals). The onus is going to be on not finishing last rather than trying to finish first because teams 1st through 4th are going to be in exactly the same boat moving forward.

The LPL 2020 season is scheduled to get underway from 26th November to 16th December 2020.

Sri Lanka is the last major cricketing nation to have its own T20 League which is a strange thing considering how much success the island nation has enjoyed in cricket. The lack of a big enough economy on the island to sustain this kind of investment that is required. The Lanka Premier League has been postponed a couple of times, cancelled, put back on, and no one really seemed to know what was going on.

Ironically, now the Lanka Premier League is being held in the middle of a raging pandemic with bio bubbles and everything else that goes along with it. With the recently concluded Indian Premier League drawing massive audience, we are hoping that another tournament in Asia will only bring in more treat to the wide audience base.

The LPL 2020 season is scheduled to get underway from 26th November to 16th December 2020.

Lanka Premier League Tournament Preview

Colombo Kings

The Colombo Kings have managed to get some of the biggest overseas names in their squad for the inaugural season. They have Faf du Plessis and Andre Russell in their team, two names that would walk into any T20 team anywhere in the world.

Andre Russell has confirmed his participation after an injury scare. He was severely hampered in the final stages of the IPL and the Kings must really consider playing him as a batsman only.

Manvinder Bisla, former IPL star who led KKR to victory against CSK, and Manpreet Gony also find themselves as members of the squad. They are not first-choice Indian players but will still attract some attention from people in the subcontinent.

Among the Sri Lanka players, Dinesh Chandimal, Angelo Matthews, Isuru Udana, Amila Aponso, and Dushmanth Chameera are the current Sri Lankan internationals. Angelo Matthews and Dinesh Chandimal are going to be the big names to follow here while Isuru Udana is going to lead the bowling challenge.

The depth in the side beyond the obvious stars seems thin and there is a huge question mark over the fitness of Andre Russell.

Dambulla Hawks

We like the look of the Dambulla Hawks. It seems like a team that has been put together using some good T20 sense about them. David Miller is the big overseas batsman that the team has been built around and we have no problems with that.

Miller’s career seems to be on a bit of a downward curve but he is still good enough to murder the kind of attacks that LPL 2020 teams have.

He will have Paul Stirling, Carlos Brathwaite, Upul Tharanga, Niroshan Dickwella, Oshada Fernando, and Dasun Shanaka in the side as batting support as well. That is a very decent lineup filled with players that excel at T20 cricket.

Dickwella is the player that we would keep an eye on as we think he would be desperate to shine on this big stage.

The bowling is a bit thin. Lahiru Kumara, Kasun Rajitha, and Dasun Shanaka seem to be local bowling leaders with Carlos Brathwaite playing a big role as well.

The Dambulla Hawks have a resilient quality about them that we think will stand them in good stead in LPL 2020.

Galle Gladiators

This is the team that is the pre-tournament favorite according to us. It has some quality overseas players, plenty of experience, and some very good bowlers to round things out.

Colin Ingram and Hazratullah Zazai are the big-hitting left-handers in the Galle side. Both of these players are known for smashing spinners around and we think they are likely to find a place in the playing eleven in most matches.

Bhanuka Rajapaksa is a Sri Lankan team regular now. Another attacking left-hander, we think he is the future captain of the Sri Lankan T20 team.

Players like Danushka Gunathilaka, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Shahid Afridi, and Milinda Siriwardana are going to add heft to the middle order as well. This brings us to the biggest strength that Galle has.

It has the best collection of spinners in the entire tournament. Shahid Afridi may not be able to bat with any conviction anymore but his bowling continues to be ageless. Milinda Siriwardana, Lakshan Sandakan, and Akila Danajaya are all brilliant T20 bowlers.

Mohammad Amir is also a part of the squad and that makes the Galle Gladiators bowling attack one of the most dangerous in the tournament.

If the batsmen can find a way to get enough runs, the Gladiators are always going to be in the game.

Jaffna Stallions

Jaffna Stallions is another dangerous team and could be a contender for the title. In Dawid Malan, it has one of the most consistent T20 batsmen anywhere in the world. Malan has proven himself to be successful across conditions and is going to be a real threat to all the other teams.

He will have Avishka Fernando, Shoaib Mailik, Dhananjaya de Silva, and Thisara Perera for support. Apart from Fernando, the other Sri Lankan players are all-rounders that are useful with the bat but not the most consistent.

Shoaib Malik has more or less retired from cricket but was pretty good in the middle-order up until his recent outings. How well he starts in the LPL remains to be seen. Asif Ali from Pakistan is also a member of the squad.

We find him to be overrated. He promises a power-hitting game but rarely ever delivers.

Usman Shinwari, Suranga Lakmal, and Wanindu Hasaranga will lead the bowling attack with support from the all-rounders.

The Jaffna Stallions could do well if one its star batsman has a good tournament otherwise it may struggle.

Kandy Tuskers

The biggest name in T20 history, Chris Gayle, is going to be a part of the Kandy Tuskers. Gayle was in brilliant form in the IPL and made massive difference ever since he was included in the playing eleven.

It will be interesting to see if he continues to play at number three or moves back up to the opening slot.

Kusal Mandis is a man of immense promise but someone who has chronically under-delivered. He was supposed to be the next great Sri Lankan batsman after Kumar Sangakkara and mahela Jayawardene but that has not happened. The LPL is going to be a great opportunity for him to shut some critics up.

Asela Gunaratne and Kusal Perera join the Tuskers as premier batsmen. We hope to see Kusal Perera and Chris Gayle in prime batting form together as that is going to be a real sight to see.

Liam Plunkett, Wahab Riaz, Nuwan Pradeep, and Dilruwan Perera will lead the bowling for the Tuskers. This is a pretty good bowling attack with genuine pace and wicket-taking ability that is going to be rare in the LPL.

The form of Chris Gayle and Kusal Perera is going to be crucial but this is a team that everyone else is going to be nervous coming up against.
