Pakistan Super League 2020 Tournament Preview

The fifth season of the Pakistan Super League is about to get underway and in many ways, this is the most important season of the PSL in the league’s short history. For the first time ever, all the matches of the Pakistan Super League are going to be played in Pakistan. In early iterations, the PSL has played its matches outside Pakistan or hosted the finals in Pakistan.

Foreign players were even paid extra for travelling to Pakistan and playing there.

This season, the PSL has drawn a line in the sand and decided to hold the entire league on home soil even if a few marquee names pull out. We cannot help but think that is for the best for cricket in Pakistan. The crowds are going to pile into the stadiums and provide the entire PSL a completely different atmosphere.

In many ways, PSL 2020 is the first real Pakistan Super League season.

Let’s take a look at the teams and see who is poised to end up with the title.

Islamabad United

PSL 2019 Result: 3rd

Key Players: Mohammad Musa, Phil Salt, Shadab Khan

Islamabad United PSL 2020 Preview

Islamabad United is the only team to win the PSL title twice and that it makes it the most successful side of the PSL up until now. It does not have the same consistency as some of the other teams, though, and does not have the highest winning percentage in the league.

We are looking at the squad for PSL 2020 and have some reservations about Islamabad United.

The batting is going to be largely led by overseas players. Colin Munro, Colin Ingram, Luke Ronchi, Rassie van der Dussen, and Phil Salt are the prominent batsmen that Islamabad United is counting on. Out of these, Colin Munro can struggle against spin on the slower wickets, Colin Ingram has seen a downturn in his T20 fortunes over the last one year, Luke Ronchi is well past his best, while Rassie van der Dussen and Phil Salt are untested in subcontinent conditions.

The one advantage that Phil Salt and Rassie van der Dussen do have is that they are in the prime of their careers and will be hungry for success. They have also tasted success in their T20 careers very recently.

Asif Ali, Faheem Ashraf, Shadab Khan, Saif Badar, and a few more all-rounders don’t really give us too much confidence in this batting lineup.

The bowling attack is quite good with Dale Steyn and Muhammad Musa providing the pace bowling fire with support from Faheem Ashraf and Rumman Raees. Shadab Khan and Zafar Gohar are likely to be the spinners for Islamabad United starting out.

Overall, the Islamabad United team looks dangerous with appearing to be title contenders for PSL 2020.

Karachi Kings

PSL 2019 Result: 4th

Key Players: Imad Wasim, Babar Azam, Chris Jordan, Alex Hales

Karachi Kings PSL 2020 Preview

The Karachi Kings have been an underperforming team since the start of the Pakistan Super League. It has never finished above third place and always tends to promise more than it can deliver. We think this team could be one of the beneficiaries of the move back to Pakistan.

Leading the team is going to be Imad Wasim. He is the typical T20 player who can bat a bit and bowl to keep the batsman quiet. More importantly, he also has the temperament to perform under pressure and seems to have a good understanding of the game.

Babar Azam is having the best year of his cricketing career so far and is now widely regarded as one of the top batsmen around the world. T20 cricket is one of his real strengths and we think he could score a boatload of runs during PSL 2020.

Alex Hales, Iftikhar Ahmed, Cameron Delport, and Mohammad Rizwan are some of the other batsmen that the Karachi Kings will be counting on. It is important for one of the overseas players to get in for early because depending completely on Babar Azam is a risky proposition. Sharjeel Khan is also in the mix after serving his ban for match-fixing and it will be interesting to see how he goes.

Mohammad Amir, Usama Mir, Chris Jordan, Liam Plunkett, Ali Khan, and Imad Wasim give the Karachi Kings plenty of options to choose from. Chris Jordan has elevated his game tremendously in the recent few months and is one of the best exponents of the yorker around the world.

Babar Azam and Mohammad Amir are two players that love the limelight. They both seem to become better as the pressure ramps up and so playing in front of Pakistani crowds could just be the motivation they need to give PSL 2020 their best efforts.

Lahore Qalandars

PSL 2019 Result: 6th

Key Players: Mohammad Hafeez, Haris Rauf, Chris Lynn

Lahore Qalandars PSL 2020 Preview

The Lahore Qalandars are the least successful team in the history of the Pakistan Super League. The side has finished dead last in every single edition of the PSL. The draft system means that it ends up with a first pick that should help it do better next year but that has not quite panned out up until now.

There are some very promising players in the team once again, including those whose stocks have risen in the recent months. Haris Rauf is one player that comes to mind. He was a left-field choice for the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League where he impressed everyone watching. Rauf even got a call up to the national team and is almost a certainty to make it to the T20 World Cup squad.

Mohammad Hafeez is another player that is back in the national team and is now cleared to bowl as well.

The talent around these players is also quite good on paper. Shaheen Afridi and Usman Shinwari help round out an all international bowling attack.

Ben Dunk, Samit Patel, Seekkuge Prasanna, David Wiese, and Lendl Simmons provide a good mix of experience and options as well in the overseas players bracket. Salman Butt has been picked by the Lahore Qalandars as well after scoring a ton of runs in the domestic competitions around Pakistan.

He over 35 years old and nearing the end of his career but his desire to make a name for himself once again and win the love of the Pakistani people is going to at its highest.

The batting appears to be a bit on the weaker side and there seems to be a lack of power in the middle-order. The bowling, though, looks among the strongest in PSL 2020. Maybe this is the year when the Lahore Qalandars finally move up from the bottom of the league standings.

Multan Sultans

PSL 2019 Result: 5th

Key Players: Moeen Ali, Shahid Afridi, Imran Tahir

Multan Sultans PSL 2020 Preview

The Multan Sultans are the newest team in the Pakistan Super League and will be playing their third season of the PSL. Both the previous seasons have not been ones to remember, though, as they have finished 5th on both the occasions.

It is difficult to fault the Multan Sultans too much since they started with a disadvantage and had to pick from players that were either discarded or not already valuably guarded by the other teams. Now that excuse is fading and the Multan Sultans would be eager for success.

Shan Masood is going to be leading the Multan Sultans in PSL 2020, a slightly strange choice in our opinion considering the other options in the squad. Masood is not known for his T20 exploits and will be under pressure to justify his place in the side and as captain.

We think the Multan Sultans have a very good set of overseas players. They have Imran Tahir, who remains one of the best spinners in T20 cricket going around, James Vince, Rilee Rossouw, Moeen Ali, Ravi Bopara, and Fabian Allen.

A lot of all-round talent for the Multan Sultans to use as well as some serious batsmen in the T20 format in that lost. We think the Multan Sultans will go for Imran Tahir, James Vince, Rilee Rossow, and Moeen Ali if they are all available to be picked. The backups are pretty good as well.

Among the Pakistani players, Shahid Afridi is the headling player but pickings remain a bit slim around him. Mohammad Irfan and Sohail Tanvir are the ends of their careers while Junaid Khan is pretty inconsistent in the T20 format as well.

There are a number of youngsters in the side but unless one of them has a breakout season and performs above expectations, the Multan Sultans are going to continue to struggle.

Peshawar Zalmi

PSL 2019 Result: Runners-up

Key Players: Kamran Akmal, Kieron Pollard, Liam Livingstone, Tom Banton

Peshawar Zalmi PSL 2020 Preview

Peshawar Zalmi has finished as the losing finalist for two consecutive seasons in the Pakistan Super League now. Winners of the PSL in 2017, Peshawar Zalmi has never finished below third and that is a credit to the entire team management.

Peshawar Zalmi is not known for making too many changes and keeps the core of its side unchanged.

The one thing that is immediately apparent after taking a look at the Peshawar Zalmi squad is that it is one of the most powerful batting squads in the entire competition. Tom Banton, Liam Livingstone, and Kieron Pollard are three of the most fearsome strikers of the cricket ball in T20 cricket.

Kamran Akmal is also quite prolific in the PSL and a threat in Pakistani conditions.

Add the experience of Shoaib Malik to the side and you have a batting lineup which is very intimidating.

Liam Dawson, Dwaine Pretorius, and Darren Sammy himself add three all-round options to the squad as well. Our main criticism of the Peshawar Zalmi setup is the choice to make Darren Sammy captain. He is not, and has not been for a while, an elite T20 cricketer.

His biggest value to the team comes from his ability to build teams and relationships with the players. Whether that is worth sacrificing a better overseas player in the playing eleven is something we are highly skeptical of.

The bowling department of the Peshawar Zalmi side features two bowlers that are not in the current scheme of things for the Pakistan national team. Hasan Ali was at the top of the world rankings not too far back and wowing fans with his trademark celebrations. Wahab Riaz also seems to have fallen out of favor after taking retirement from test cricket.

Both these bowlers have a lot of international experience and are dangerous customers. Rahat Ali is also in a very similar position although perhaps he is not as talented as the other two.

The lack of a quality spinner is something that could hurt Peshawar Zalmi in Pakistan.

Quetta Gladiators

PSL 2019 Result: Winners

Key Players: Jason Roy, Naseem Shah, Mohammad Hasnain, Ahmed Shehzad

Quetta Gladiators PSL 2020 Preview

The defending champions of the Pakistan Super League are going to be in the sights of every other team this time around. They are going to be led by former Pakistan captain, Sarfaraz Ahmed and have two of Pakistan’s most impressive fast-bowlers in the squad.

We are talking about Naseem Shah, the 16 year old who has set the cricketing world alight with his exploits, and Mohammad Hasnain, who was a large part of the Quetta Gladiators success last season.

Both these teenagers will lead the attack for the Quetta Gladiators and it will be a great spectacle to see them bowl at searing pace in tandem. The presence of Tymal Mills, Mohammad Nawaz, Sohail Khan, and Fawad Ahmed gives the Quetta Gladiators a very good bowling attack.

They have options for all conditions including quality spinners that some of the other teams lack.

We are a bit concerned about their batting, though.

Ahmed Shahzad is known to be a very good player in Pakistani conditions but can he be really relied upon this stage in his career? Sarafaz Ahmed’s batting has fallen off a cliff and we don’t rate him as a contender anymore.

Jason Roy is very dangerous at the top of the order but we have seen him play one good inning in T20 tournaments around the world and then struggle to have any impact later. Shane Watson has reduced his cricket dramatically and remains a threat but he is also pretty slow to start off the blocks.

A couple of bad matches or a poor run of form for one of the top-order batsmen could see the Quetta Gladiators struggle to replicate their success from the previous season. We don’t see them finishing in the top-3 in PSL 2020.

PSL 2020 Predictions

Winner: Karachi Kings

Top-3 teams: Karachi Kings, Peshawar Zalmi, and Lahore Qalandars

About the PSL

The Pakistan Super League is a professional Twenty20 league that is based in Lahore, Pakistan. This league was formed towards the end of 2015, during which a contract was signed to keep it going for a minimum of 10 years.

The Pakistan Cricket Board administers the PSL, and six teams compete in the league. Despite being based in Pakistan, the first season was not played in the country. What’s more, not all of the league’s teams are owned by Pakistani interests, and there is also a relatively large percentage of non-Pakistani players in the league.

Typically, Pakistani players dominate top-flight cricket, but surprisingly for a league based in Pakistan, that is not the case with the PSL. It is a very diverse league, and therefore attracts a lot of attention from fans worldwide.

However the Pakistani politicians are manouvering to make it more of a domestic success, and next year they plan to have very match played at home.

Format

There are only six teams in the Pakistan Super League, and a draft system is used for each of these teams to sign players. This system is a little different from systems used in other major cricket leagues and bears a closer resemblance to the draft system used in major American sports such as the NFL. This means that players are assigned a draft number, which reflects the round in which they will become available. The teams then choose one player per round, with the better players generally being available during the early rounds. This system eliminates the need for high-priced auctions.

The PSL season runs between the months of February and March, with each team playing matches in double round robin format. This means that all teams play each other twice

The top four teams with the best record qualify for the playoffs and culminates in the championship game, the PSL Cup Final.

The playoff system gives first and second place an advantage over third and fourth place. Illustrated below:

As mentioned earlier the PSL consists of six teams:

History

The Pakistan Super League was announced in September 2015, with the first season beginning in early 2016. Former Pakistan cricket captains Rameez Raja and Wasim Akram, who are well respected throughout the country, became ambassadors for the league early on, and are due to remain so until at least 2018.

Although the league’s five teams represent Pakistan cities, it was decided to host the league in the United Arab Emirates, where the Pakistan national team had been stationed following attacks on the Sri Lankan team in Lahore. The Pakistan Super League was a very diverse league from the outset, with nearly a dozen different countries represented by the players of the five teams.

According to the Pakistan Cricket Board, there was no shortage of interest in the league’s individual franchises, and within a month of announcing the Pakistan Super League, they began accepting offers for the five teams. The most money was paid by ARY Media Group, a holding company that is based in Dubai but is owned by a Pakistani businessman. They paid $26 million for the Karachi Knights, a price that reflects the fact that Karachi is the largest and most populated city in the world, and one that should not be short of fans.

A Qatar based company paid a little less for the Lahore Qalanders, based in Lahore, and the least amount of money was paid for the Quetta Gladiators, which is owned by Nadeem Omar. At $15 million, the Islamabad United franchise was far from the most expensive, yet it was they who won the first season of the Pakistan Super League, beating the Quetta Gladiators in a final that was staged at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

All franchises were purchased for 10 years.

On June first 2017, Schön Properties bought PCB Multan for a of $5.2 million per year becoming the most expensive team of the PSL. However, on 12 November 2018, its rights were terminated by PCB due to payment issues. PCB invited bids and resold the "6th team" to Ali Tareen consortium after a successful bid of $6.35 million for 7 years on 20th December 2017.

Peshawar Zalmi were the 2017 PSL Champions, having defeated Quetta Gladiators in Lahore on 5 March 2017. The current champions are Islamabad United, who won the title on 25 March 2018 in Karachi.

Streaming PSL

There has been a lot of controversy regarding TV rights in cricket games, as is so often the case. However, in Pakistan you can watch live games from the Pakistan Super League on YouTube. Typically, even highlights of games are quick to be pulled from this popular video site, with the people who posted them being slapped with a copyright notice, but the league seems to be embracing live streaming instead of doing all they can to stop it.

Also last year bet365 streamed every match for free, to its users. More about that here

Frequently Asked Questions

We have chosen our top 3 at the top of this page, however almost any of the top 10 of our reviewed betting sites will be a great choice.

Every sportsbook with respect for itself covers the PSL.

And if they didn't, we wouldn't recommend them on our site.

This will depend quite a bit on your personal preferences.

Yes, you can! But will you? Sadly, probably not. Sports betting is a business for the operators that offer it, and they are not doing this just for the love of the sport. That means that you have a big hill to climb in trying to outsmart someone that is making boatloads of money on losing bettors and employ hundreds of people to make sure the odds is set correctly.

For you to end up a winner cricket betting you need to have patience, bet within your means and have a knack for analyzing betting odds. You cannot rely on simple systems or go with your gut on games, that is not enough to outsmart bookmakers with their huge databases of statistics and knowledge of the sport.

But even though you are probably not going to win, that does not have to make a difference. We are not winners on every sport we follow and most of us even keep a "fun-fund" where we just place bets for fun and try to put our wits to battle with the best oddsmakers in the hopes of winning. It is a lot more fun than grinding away at betting. Sure, we might be losing money, but what kind of entertainment doesn't cost money? And that is what betting should be: entertaining and fun!

All the different countries and regions around the world have their own laws and regulations when it comes to online betting. Betting is legal in the UK for example, but illegal in the US, but not on a state level. Some states are opening up for online gambling, but this brings aboard a whole nother set of problems. The same goes for a region like India where the laws are still unclear and some regions allow it while others don't.

What is clear though is that depositing and withdrawing funds from betting sites online can be a hassle depending on where you are from. Using your credit card(s) is quite easy, but sometimes there are fees attached to this and not everyone is comfortable giving out this information to websites. That is why we recommend to use ewallets. These are forms of internet bank accounts (or ewallets) that function just like a normal bank account, but they are operated purely online. The big advantage with these is that they are swift in depositing and withdrawals and have low to none fees associated with them. Makes life as a bettor a lot easier.

If everything else seems to fail and you are unable to deposit funds you can always ask the customer service at the site you are trying to deposit at for help, they will usually know best what could be the issue and which option would be the best for your situation.
