PSL 2024 Betting Tips and Predictions

The 2024 edition of the Pakistan Super League will start on 17 February. This will be the eighth time the tournament has been played. Lahore Qalandars are the reigning champions. Lahore and Islamabad United are the most successful teams in the history of the PSL with two title each. This year's tournament will again comprise six teams, including Peshawar Zalmi, Karachi Kings, Multan Sultans and Quetta Gladiators.

Betting tips and predictions

Mohammad Rizwan - top batter overall

Rizwan scored the most runs in last year's PSL. He collected 550 runs in 12 innings at an average of 55 - and strike rate of 142.85. His tally included a century - 110 not out against the Karachi Kings - and four half-centuries.

Rizwan only hit 14 sixes in the 2023 PSL, but his 54 fours were the second most in the tournament. This indicates relatively low-risk, but highly effective, stroke play from the calculated right-hander. The Multan Sultans kingpin values his wicket, perhaps more than most other openers around the tournament, and is a promising pick to be the top run-scorer in this year's PSL as well.

Abbas Afridi - top bowler overall

Afridi was the top wicket-taker during last season's PSL. He took 23 wickets in 11 innings. Averaging two-plus wickets in T20 cricket across an extended period is, indeed, prolific. He hadn't been capped at international level at the time, but has since debuted in T20I cricket for Pakistan - and took five wickets his first two matches against New Zealand in mid-January 2024.

Afridi has been retained by the Multan Sultans, where he will play alongside England seamers Chris Jordan, David Willey and Reece Topley. While the English trio spearhead the Sultans' bowling resources from overseas, Afridi will be tasked with leading the local talent. Fit and in form, the 22-year-old right-arm seamer is a good choice for top bowler of the tournament again.

Imad Wasim - player of the tournament

All-rounders are often good selections in the player of the tournament markets. They can perform well with bat or ball, if not both. Quetta Gladiators all-rounder Shane Watson and Karachi Kings all-rounder Ravi Bopara showed this en route to their PSL player of the tournament awards in 2019 and 2016, respectively.

Islamabad United's Imad Wasim has since emerged as one of the best all-rounders in the PSL for several seasons. Last year, he was the fifth-highest run-scorer with 404 in 10 innings - and took nine wickets at an average of 25.88. Wasim retired from international cricket late last year and has moved from the Karachi Kings to Islamabad United, where he remains available as a player and mentor.

Tournament winner - Multan Sultans

The Sultans are the newest team in the PSL, having joined in 2018, when the tournament grew from five to six teams. Their first two campaigns resulted in group-stage exits, but they have since reached the play-offs on four consecutive occasions - and won the title once. Since 2021's title-winning campaign, the Sultans have been runners-up twice in a row.

With one first-place and two second-place finishes in the last three seasons, Multan's final positions have been strong - arguably more so than Lahore Qalandars. The Sultans have retained and recruited personnel well between the 2023 and 2024 PSL. They are solidly poised to dethrone reigning champions Lahore this year.

Last-place finish: Quetta Gladiators

Quetta's first four PSL campaigns resulted in one play-off exits, two second-place finishes and a maiden title. But they have since exited the competition in the group stage four years in a row. In 2021 and 2023, they finished at the bottom of the six-team points table.

Quetta have appointed a new head coach and bowling coach - and recruited West Indies duo Akeal Hosein and Sherfane Rutherford. Regardless, a team that has just 13 wins to show for their last 40 matches in the PSL will likely struggle to avoid the bottom of the standings for a third time in four years.

PSL 2024 ODDS

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is one of the most popular and competitive T20 cricket leagues in the world. The seventh edition of the PSL, PSL 2024, is scheduled to start in February 2024, with six teams vying for the coveted trophy.

According to the latest betting odds from 1xbet, the defending champions Karachi Kings are the favorites to win the title again, with odds of 3.50. They are followed by Lahore Qalandars, who reached the final for the first time in 2023, with odds of 4.00. The other teams are Islamabad United (5.00), Peshawar Zalmi (6.00), Multan Sultans (7.00), and Quetta Gladiators (8.00).

The PSL 2024 draft was held in December 2023, with each team picking up some exciting players from around the world. Some of the notable names include Rashid Khan, Babar Azam, Liam Livingstone, and Mohammad Amir. The PSL 2024 promises to be a thrilling contest, with high-quality cricket and entertainment on offer. Fans can follow the live scores, schedule, news, and results of the PSL 2024 on OCB.

Teams and betting analysis

Islamabad United

With four play-off and one group-stage exit from their last five seasons, Islamabad are back to rekindle the form that brought them two titles in their first three years. They have recruited England duo Jordan Cox and Tymal Mills. Cox has played in the PSL previously - and has experience in South Africa's SA20 and Australia's Big Bash  League. Mills' outright pace and masterful slower deliveries could suit conditions in Lahore, Multan, Karachi and Rawalpindi.

New Zealand batter Colin Munro was United's leading run-scorer last season with 298 in 11 innings. They have retained him this season. Islamabad have lost fast bowler Hasan Ali, who was their top wicket-taker last season, to the Karachi Kings. But they have kept all-rounder Shadab Khan, who was their second-highest wicket-taker in 2023, and can contribute plenty with the bat.

Karachi Kings

The Kings reached the play-offs in four consecutive seasons before eventually winning their first PSL title in 2020. Another play-off exit followed in 2021 and group-stage elimination in 2022 and 2023. They have signed Australian all-rounder Daniel Sams, who is among the best left-arm seamers in domestic T20 cricket around the world, and West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard.

Pollard captained MI Cape Town in the 2024 SA20 and has been working with England's coaching staff ahead of the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and United States of America. This global experience - playing and coaching - is a significant asset for the Kings. All-rounder Mohammad Nawaz's to the Kings camp is promising, too. He could be a good choice in the top Karachi bowler and batter markets.

Lahore Qalandars

PSL champions in 2022 and 23, Lahore will attempt to become the first team in the history of the tournament to win the title three times. It will be a tremendous feat if they do this across three successive seasons. Not even the record-breaking Mumbai Indians or Chennai Super Kings have managed this in the Indian Premier League.

The Qalandars have retained batter Fakhar Zaman. He was their leading run-scorer with 429 in 13 innings last season and, with the franchise's evident faith in him, could be a good choice in Lahore's top batter markets again. The Qalandars will also have Proteas star Rassie van der Dussen and local talent Sahibzada Farhan, who was the leading run-scorer in the 2023-24 National T20 Cup. Pakistan fast bowlers Haris Rauf and Shaheen Afridi typify the depth and form of Lahore's bowling resources.

Multan Sultans

After six seasons in the PSL, the Sultans have reached the play-off stage of the tournament more times than they haven't. This year, they will target reaching the final for a fourth time in a row - and perhaps secure a second title. They have, indeed, come a long way since finishing the 2018 and 2019 PSL in second-last position.

The Sultans have last PSL season's leading run-scorer and second-highest wicket-taker in Rizwan and Ihsanullah, respectively. Ihsanullah was named player of the tournament after the 2023 PSL. Another big performance could put him in contention for a return to Pakistan's ODI and T20I XIs. Multan have also recruited South Africa's Reeza Hendricks and England's Dawid Malan. Hendricks was consistently overlooked for the Proteas' XI during the 2023 Cricket World Cup. Here's another chance to show his worth to the national selectors in a T20 World Cup year.

Peshawar Zalmi

Peshawar won the PSL in 2017 before losing 2018 and 2019's final. They have reached the play-offs on four other occasions - and have never exited the tournament at the group stage. Their record couples good consistency with an inability to ultimately follow through.

Proteas fast bowler Lungi Ngidi, Afghanistan spinner Noor Ahmad and Pakistani batter Asif Ali are among Zalmi's 2024 recruits. This will be Ngidi's first time in the PSL. He has previously won the IPL title with Chennai. While Peshawar had 2023's second-highest run-scorer in Babar Azam, they did not have one representative among the top 10 wicket-takers. Azam has stayed with them, while Ngidi's arrival might help rectify last year's shortcomings with the ball.

Quetta Gladiators

Runners-up in 2016 and 2017 and title winners in 2019, the lofty heights reached by the Gladiators during their first four years in the PSL have since been overshadowed by four group-stage exits. How Quetta are going to rediscover their former successes remains in the balance. Perhaps 2024 will be their year for correction - or bring a fifth season of outright disappointment.

Their recruitment of Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir is a promising move. The Gladiators did not have a single bowler who averaged one wicket or more during last season's 10 PSL matches. Quetta's top batter last season was New Zealand's Martin Guptill. But he has not returned this year. They have England's Jason Roy, but his availability will be subject to involvement in other leagues around the world that overlap in part or coincide entirely with the 2024 PSL.

Top 3 players to watch out for

If not Rizwan, Afridi or Wasim, here are one more batter, bowler and all-rounder to keep an eye on during the 2024 PSL.

Batter - Sahibzada Farhan

The National T20 Cup is an effective breeding ground for future Pakistan Super League stars. Farhan played for Peshawar in this season's National T20 Cup and top the run-scorers list with 492 in 12 innings.

He was particularly impressive en route to 109 not out against Larkana. Farhan was capped three times in T20I cricket in 2018 and, six years later, a big showing in the PSL could catapult him back into the national team.

Bowler - Haris Rauf

Rauf made a name for himself in the Pakistan Super League and Australia's Big Bash League before graduating to national colours. He is among the fastest bowlers in world cricket, regularly reaching speeds of near 90-plus miles per hour.

He frequently rushes even the most seasoned opposition batters for pace in otherwise dull conditions in Karachi, Rawalpindi and beyond. Last PSL season, he took 17 wickets in 13 matches - and was key to Lahore winning a second successive title.

All-rounder - Shadab Khan

Islamabad United have multiple specialist batters and bowlers - and in Khan one of the best all-rounders at the tournament. Last season, he was took the second most wickets for the franchise - and ninth most overall. Batting-wise, he delivered several crucial cameos.

Whether he bats or bowls inside or outside the powerplay, Khan knows how to adapt accordingly - and pose a real threat to the opposition either way. If he the leg-spinner doesn't get much turn, he's bound to find additional bounce.

History of PSL

PSL, or Pakistan Super League, was announced in 2013, but due to internal problems, it was postponed to 2016 when the first tournament began. In 2016, the Pakistan Super League teams were Karachi Kings, Quetta Gladiators, Peshawar Zalmi, Islamabad United, and Lahore Qalandars.

In 2016, Islamabad United won the PSL season 1, while the runners-up were Quetta Gladiators. Lahore Qalandars have ruled the Pakistan Super League points table in the past two years (2022 & 2021), and the runner-up was Multan Sultan.

Rameez Raja and Wasim Akram became PSL ambassadors when it was launched. The first season of PSL was hosted in the UAE. From the start, the Pakistan Super League was diverse, with players from different countries selected for the five teams.

According to the PCB, there was a sharp incline in interest for buying franchises. Within a month of announcing the first tournament of the Pakistan Super League, there were many offers for all teams. The ARY Media Group paid $26 million for the Karachi Knights.

A Qatar-based company paid a little less for the Lahore Qalandars, based in Lahore, and the least amount of money was paid for the Quetta Gladiators, owned by Nadeem Omar. The Islamabad United franchise was bought for $15 million. Islamabad United won the first season of the PSL, beating the Quetta Gladiators in the finals. All the mentioned franchises were purchased for 10 years.

On June 1, 2017, Schön Properties acquired PCB Multan for $5.2 million annually, making it the priciest team in the PSL. However, on November 12, 2018, PCB terminated its rights due to payment issues. The "6th team" was then resold to the Ali Tareen consortium for $6.35 million for a 7-year period on December 20, 2017.
