Auckland Hearts Women

The Hearts had opted for a mixture of experienced and young players while selecting the squad for this season but that strategy doesn’t seem to have yielded the desired results up till now. The team has alternated between wins and losses and sits 4th on the points table, trailing the top 2 teams by 6 points.

Katie Perkins, who is by far the most experienced batter in the Hearts’ squad, is having a terrible outing this season, managing to score just 18 runs from 4 innings. Saachi Shahri has been excellent at the top of the order, scoring 130 runs so far. She has received good support from Bella Armstrong and Lauren Down, both of whom have played a couple of nice innings.

Arlene Kelly is one of the better all-rounders in Women’s T20 cricket. She has managed to pick up 4 wickets but hasn’t gotten much of a chance to bat this season. Fran Jonas, who is among the youngest players in the squad, has notched 5 wickets in just 3 games, while seamer Amie Hucker has picked up 4 in 4 matches.

Overall, while there are some pretty talented individuals in the Hearts’ squad, they have failed to perform well as a single unit and that is something that the team will need to work on going forward. 

Canterbury Women

The Magicians had an excellent start to the season, winning each of their 3 opening matches. However did taste defeat in their most recent outing, losing against the reigning champions, the Wellington Blaze by 11 runs. They are still second in the points table, trailing Wellington by 4 points.

This season for the Magicians has been all about the all-round performance of Amy Satterthwaite. Satterthwaite, who announced her retirement from international cricket last year, is in excellent form. She has scored 134 runs in 3 innings, including 2 half-centuries, and has also picked up 5 wickets. Kate Anderson has been consistent too at the top of the order, scoring 157 runs.

The other batters haven’t been able to perform as well. However, most of their shortcomings have been masked by an exceptional bowling effort by the Magicians. Young seamer Melissa Banks is the leading wicket-taker for the team as well as in the tournament with 8 wickets. She has received excellent support from fellow speedster Gabby Sullivan, who has picked up 6 wickets so far.

Veteran Lea Tahuhu, who was earlier dropped from the international side has notched up 5 wickets. The Magicians will need a better batting effort if they want to move to the top of the table.<br />
