The Stags began their latest campaign with a defeat against Wellington, but since then have played some excellent cricket to win the last 2 matches.

Their latest match was played against reigning champions, the Northern Braves. Opting to field first, the bowlers were very expensive, giving away 217 runs in 20 overs. Tom Bruce and Raymond Toole picked up 3 wickets each, while Doug Bracewell got 2.

The chase for the Stags began on shaky ground as they lost wickets at regular intervals during the first few overs. Dane Cleaver and Ross Taylor got a good start in the middle order but were dismissed just when they were looking threatening. With more than 90 runs needed off the final 7 overs, the hosts appeared to be heading towards a certain loss.

It was just at that time that Josh Clarkson and Doug Bracewell bludgeoned 83 runs off just 35 deliveries and helped the Stags steal a stunning win. While the batsmen of the Central Stags team are performing well, the bowlers will need to keep a tight leash on the opposition batsmen going forward. 

Auckland Aces

The Auckland Aces have had a different outcome for each of their first 3 matches. After beginning the season with a win against Canterbury. They lost their next match, played against Otago, by 37 runs, while their third match, a reverse fixture against Otago ended in a thrilling tie.

In that match, Otago opted to field first and allowed the Otago batsmen to score 174 runs from 20 overs, with Sean Solia, Lockie Ferguson, and Louise Delport picking up 2 wickets each. The seam bowlers of the Auckland Aces have been excellent since the start of the season and have played an important role in whatever success they have achieved.

As the chase began, the Aces lost opener George Worker pretty cheaply but the middle order shouldered the responsibility pretty well and kept the chase on the right track. Needing 18 to win off the final over, William O’Donnell and Lockie Ferguson held their nerve and hit a couple of boundaries and a six to elate the home crowd. However, with scores tied, O’Donnell was run-out of the very last delivery and the league saw its first tie of the season.
