England Women

England Women struggled against the Indian spinners on a slow track and had to settle for a below-par total. Dunkley, Capsey, Wyatt, and the lower-order all got starts but no one really went on to make it count. Even in that first match, though, you could see just how much depth England's batting has. 

On a bad day, it was able to push India and force its two best batters to score big. On a good day, we think England's batting has the capability to completely bat India out of the contest. 

Perhaps of more concern would be the bowling performance. England's bowlers did not trouble Mandhana or Kaur at any stage of their innings. Most of the bowlers were expensive and gave up a lot of runs. Kate Cross and Sophie Ecclestone were perhaps the two that managed to regain some sort of control on proceedings. 

India Women

Inda played brilliantly in the first ODI. In fact, it was close to a flawless performance and will be hard to repeat. The bowlers took early wickets and the spinners were hard to score off. The batters, led by Mandhana and Kaur, batted with purpose and scored at a rapid rate ensuring that there was never any scoreboard pressure while chasing. 

India can be very hard to beat when it plays like this but as we saw in the T20s, the dependence on Mandhana and Kaur is just too obvious. Even in the first match, with a below-par target, if the senior Indian batters had gotten out, we think India would have struggled. 

Also, the conditions were very helpful for the slower bowlers in the first match and that is unlikely to be the case for the second one.

India's bowling could struggle on a better batting surface and India's lack of batting depth can be a problem.
