IND vs AUS Match Prediction - Mar 17, 2023

India and Australia will play a 3-match ODI series against each other starting in Mumbai. This series is more important than other bilateral since it builds towards the ODI World Cup 2023 to be held in India in just a few months. Both teams are nearly at full strength, although they will miss their full-time captains for the opening match.

India goes into this match as the favorite at all the best cricket betting sites, however, Australia is very dangerous and one of the world's best ODI teams.

Match prediction and cricket betting tips for India vs Australia 1st ODI 2023. The match is going to be played at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on the 17th of March 2023.

IND vs AUS Team Previews

India

India will be without Rohit Sharma for the opening match of the ODI series. In his absence, Hardik Pandya will be captain and we got an idea of how he likes to operate when he captained India against New Zealand. He is likely to play a full role for India as an all-rounder by bowling with the new ball and also batting in the middle order.

The absence of Rohit Sharma at the top will also mean an opportunity for one batter at the top. Shubman Gill is the first-choice opener and it will be interesting to see if India goes with Ishan Kishan or KL Rahul at the top. Ishan Kishan scored a double century at the top of the order not too long back and looks most comfortable against the new ball but he also played as the first-choice wicketkeeper-batter in the middle order against New Zealand.

If Ishan Kishan has to play in the middle long-term then KL Rahul should open, which is what we think will happen.

The main batting strength comes from Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Ishan Kishan, SKY, and Hardik Pandya. A strong middle-order with Gill and Kohli in excellent ODI form. In fact, we would bet on Gill to get another big score in this match as he is comfortably one of the most in-form batters in the world right now.

Picking India's bowling lineup is not an easy task either. Mohammad Siraj and Mohammad Shami are comfortably the best new-ball combination while Umran Malik has the raw pace (but can be expensive). Ravindra Jadeja or Axar Patel should play as the bowling all-rounder at number 7, giving the team a nice amount of depth while one out of Kuldeep Yadav or Yuzvendra Chahal should play as the attacking spinner.

On a flat Mumbai wicket where runs can be hard to stop, we think Ravindra Jadeja and Umran Malik might end up being very expensive.

India Playing 11

Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Lokesh Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami.

Australia

Australia is a fantastic white-ball team and while it may not have done as well as England in recent events, it is not far behind. We know that Pat Cummins is not going to be available for this series. In his absence, Steve Smith will take over as captain. David Warner, injured during the Tests, is also expected to be back.

There are some serious batters to choose from when it comes to the Australian squad. Travis Head and David Warner may end up opening the batting. A flexible batting order which has Steve Smith, Cameron Green, Mitchell Marsh, Marcus Stoinis, Alex Carey, and Glenn Maxwell should be what we see for the first ODI.

Players like Labushagne and Inglis may have to miss out, showing the kind of strength in the lineup.

Adam Zampa, Mitchell Starc, and Sean Abbott could end up being the only three regular bowlers as Green, Stoinis, Maxwell, and Marsh can all bowl as well. Such a lineup is very strong in the batting department, has plenty of six-hitting power, and is experienced in Indian conditions.

We think the Australian lineup is not only capable of pushing the Indian team but also getting the better of it.

Australia Playing 11

Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, Steven Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Josh Inglis, Cameron Green, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Sean Abbott, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa.

IND vs AUS Toss Prediction

The team that wins the toss is going to want to field first. Defending a total at Wankhede can be quite tough although stats show us that out of 22 ODIs played here, 11 have been won by the team batting first and 11 by the team batting second.

A more recent look shows that six out of the previous seven ODIs have been won by the team that has chased.

Read our guide on toss predictions to learn how we analyze and come up with our tips.

Pitch and Conditions

There is absolutely no rain predicted on match day. The temperatures should range between 26-32 degrees celsius.

The pitch at the Wankhede is brilliant for batting. The ball comes on to the bat nicely and travels a fair distance. Not only are the boundaries small but the low atmospheric pressure also contributes to a lot of sixes being hit. Interestingly, never has more than 284 been chased successfully at the Wankhede Stadium.

The highest total here is 438/4 by South Africa in 2015.

IND vs AUS Betting Tips

India has lost its previous three matches at the Wankhede. It is also without Rohit Sharma in this match and that is a massive loss. Australia's ODI team is stacked with batting depth and firepower and we think they are better equipped to take advantage of what are expected to be excellent batting conditions.

The odds being offered by the sites like Betway are also quite attractive.

Ishan Kishan is someone who usually gets out cheaply or makes a big score. He has crossed 30 only twice in his previous seven ODI innings. We feel comfortable betting against him and recommend a medium sized bet.

This appears to be a favorable Over/Under line for this match. There are superb six-hitters on both teams (SKY, Mitch Marsh etx) and the surface is also expected to be good for batting. A high-scoring match with a lot of sixes could be in store.
