MLR vs PER Match Prediction - Jan 01, 2023

The Melbourne Renegades will be looking to break their losing streak as they face a rampant Perth Scorchers on New Year's Day in the Big Bash League. Understandably, the odds for a Perth Scorchers win are pretty short on most cricket betting sites. But the Renegades have a lot of potential in their lineup and will not go down without a fight.

MLR vs PER Team Previews

Melbourne Renegades

The Renegades started their season on a superb note, winning each of its first 3 matches. But their form has seen a sudden dip, and are now on a 3-match losing streak. They enter this contest with back-to-back losses against the Sydney Sixers.

The Renegades finished each of the last 3 seasons with a wooden spoon and are hoping for a revival this time around. The batting has been a big letdown in the last 3 matches. Andre Russell was excellent with the bat but had to depart after playing 4 matches.

Martin Guptill, who has joined the squad since then, hasn’t been in the best of forms. Aaron Finch is in sublime form so far and had been the mainstay of the Renegades’ batting but hasn’t received much support from the other batsmen.

Peter Handscomb, Jonathan Wells, and Will Sutherland have all struggled to get runs. Akeal Hosein, who is the third-highest wicket-taker this season, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman, have both been excellent with the ball but will be departing soon to play in the UAE.

In their absence, the local seamer, Tom Rogers, who himself has been in good form, will have even more responsibilities on his shoulders.

Perth Scorchers

The Scorchers lost their second match of the season, played against the Hurricanes, but since then have made a superb comeback. They have won three consecutive matches and are at the top of the points table, edging out the Strikers on NRR.

Pundits were skeptical about the Scorchers’ performance this season due to the departure of star international players, including the likes of Mitch Marsh, Phil Salt, and Laurie Evans. However, the local talent has filled in nicely to ease the pain. Ashton Turner and Aaron Hardie have played well in the middle order, while Josh Inglis and Faf du Plessis have gone ballistic on the opposition bowlers.

The form of Adam Lyth and Nick Hobson does remain a bit of a concern but the way the other batsmen are batting, the Scorchers are easily one of the best batting units of the tournament. The bowling has been pace-heavy for the defending champions.

Jhye Richardson is the top wicket-taker in the squad with 12 wickets and has received good support from Andrew Tye and Jason Behrendorff. Peter Hatzoglou and Aston Agar are leading the pace attack but have seen limited success so far.

Pitch and Conditions

The Docklands Stadium uses a drop-in pitch which is generally excellent to bat on. The bounce is consistent and even, allowing the batsmen to free their arms. The average first innings score there is around 160. The quicker bowlers will find some assistance here, but the success for spinners is limited.

The skies are expected to remain clear with temperatures ranging from 25-34 degrees Celsius.

MLR vs PER Betting Tips

The Scorchers are the defending champions and the most successful franchise in the BBL. After an initial hiccup, the team is back in form, with both, the batsmen and the bowlers performing well. On the other hand, despite major changes to the squad, the woes for the Renegades seem to continue.

We are going to back the visitors here as they look in a better position to exploit the ground conditions.

Josh Inglis has been in excellent form this season. The wicketkeeper-batsman is the highest run-getter for the Scorchers with 187 runs and has scored 2 half-centuries in 5 matches. His average of 46.75 is the best within his team and we reckon that he will enjoy batting on the flat pitch at Melbourne. That is why we are backing Josh Inglis to be the top scorer for his team in this match.
