MLS vs MLR Match Prediction - Jan 03, 2023

Finally, it’s time for the much-awaited Melbourne Derby in the BBL as the Stars take on the Renegades on Tuesday.

Both teams have struggled to perform consistently this season and there is no clear favorite to win this contest. One can surf through some of the reputed betting sites and search for favorable odds to lay their bets.

MLS vs MLR Team Previews

Melbourne Stars

It was certain from the very start of the season that the Melbourne Stars would struggle a bit in the absence of their star batsman, Glenn Maxwell, who is likely to miss out the entire season due to a broken leg. However, the management had high hopes for Joe Clarke, who had finished the previous season with the most half-centuries.

Clarke has delivered on expected lines as he is the top run-getter for his team this season, scoring 232 runs at an average of 46.40. However, the other batsmen have failed to support him on most occasions and that has been one of the main reasons for the Stars’ poor performances so far.

Marcus Stoinis finally struck some form in the last match, played against the Strikers, and led his team to an 8-run win. Stoinis bludgeoned 6 maximums in his 35-ball innings and made 74 runs to help the Stars post 186-7 in their 20 overs.

Towards the final stages of the chase, the hosts came threateningly close to winning the match, but Luke Wood managed to hold his nerve in the final over and the Stars were able to break their 3-match losing streak.

Going forward, the Stars will need to make iimprovements in all aspects of the game if they want to have a shot at finishing in the top 4.

Melbourne Renegades

The Renegades had a dream start to the season as they convincingly won their first 3 matches. However, things have gone rapidly downhill since then, and the Renegades are now on a 4-match losing streak.

Aaron Finch has performed remarkably well amidst an average effort by the Renegades batsmen. Finch has scored 236 runs so far and is second on the list of top run-getters for the season. Much was expected of Jon Wells, who is the 4th highest scorer in BBL history, and Martin Guptill, but both of them have been quite underwhelming so far.

Draft pick Akeal Hosein has been the best performer with the ball for the Renegades as he has picked up 12 wickets in 7 matches. Tom Rogers and Mujeeb Ur Rahman have given him good support, but overall, the team has been unable to perform well as a unit and as a result, is seen struggling at this stage.

The Renegades will also be concerned about the availability of Maddinson and Handscomb, both of whom had to leave the field due to fitness issues during the last match.

With just 6 matches left to play after this one, the Renegades will be desperate to get back to winning ways.

MLS vs MLR Toss Prediction

The team winning the toss will be looking to bowl first here.

Pitch and Conditions

The pitch at the MCG is one of the most balanced pitches in Australia and is known to generate some close contests between the bat and the ball. While the quicker bowlers have the upper hand at the start due to the genuine bounce offered by the surface, the batsmen will find it easy to play shots as the match progresses.

The average first innings score here is around 145. It is expected to remain overcast throughout the day but there is little chance of any rain. The temperature is expected to remain below the 20-degree mark.

MLS vs MLR Betting Tips

Both teams have some serious issues to iron out as they stare down a barrel with half the season over. Batting has been the biggest letdown for both the teams but the Stars seem to have finally managed to get a move along in that department, thanks to an inspiring knock by Stoinis in the last match.

The Renegades on the other hand continue to struggle and also have a couple of fitness issues nagging the squad. That is why we are backing the Stars here.

Guptill joined the Renegades’ squad after Christmas as a replacement for Andre Russell. He has played 3 matches since then but has struggled quite a bit to score runs. His highest score in these 3 matches is 12, and he has scored a total of 18 runs with an average of just 6.00. Seeing his poor form, it is only sane to back Under here.
