OV vs CS Match Prediction - Jan 29, 2023

The Central Stags will be looking to get back to winning ways as it faces the Otago Volts this weekend in the Super Smash League.

The Stags are currently second on the points table and will be looking to win both of its remaining matches in the group stage to ensure an easy qualification to the next round. On the other hand, the Otago Volts are just 2 points behind but to their advantage, they do have an extra match in hand.<br />

OV vs CS Team Previews

Otago Volts

The performance of the Otago Volts is a mirror image of their opponents as they haven’t faced a defeat after losing their two opening matches. They are third on the points table, leading Wellington by a couple of points. With 3 matches still to go, the Volts will be quite hopeful of qualifying for the Eliminator.

In their latest outing, the Volts defeated this very opponent in a close game and that should give them plenty of confidence. In that match, Dean Foxcroft once again showcased his batting talent, scoring his 3rd half-century of the season. Llew Johnson has provided him with good support lower down the order. However, the other batsmen haven’t got going till now and will need to work harder to keep the winning momentum going.

Matthew Bacon bowled a superb spell of 5 for 28 in the last match to rattle the Central Stags and will be hoping to emulate the performance in this game too. Michael Rae too has bowled exceedingly well this season and is the leading wicket-taker of this tournament with 12 wickets. Ben Lockrose and Dean Foxcroft will be looking to keep things tight to bring the opposition batsmen under pressure.

Central Districts

The Stags had a superb start to the season, losing just 1 of its first 5 completed games in the tournament. However, they have seen a slight dip in form during the last week as they come into this match on the back of consecutive losses. The first of those came against this very opponent in a reverse fixture, and the more recent one came against Canterbury.

The batting has been a bit of a letdown for the Central Stags this season as none of their top batsmen have been able to deliver consistently. Josh Clarkson has been the leading run-getter for his team with 192 runs in 6 innings. Ben Smith and Tom Bruce have got a couple of good starts but have failed to build upon them. More will be expected from the likes of Bayley Wiggins and Will Young if the Stags want to earn a direct path to the finals.

Raymond Toole and Jayden Lennox have been bowling well, picking up 11 wickets each, while Brett Randell and Tom Bruce have played a good supporting role. Overall, the Central Stags have a well-balanced team but they will need to work harder as a unit to gain back their winning momentum.

Pitch and Conditions

The surface at the University Oval in Dunedin is a balanced one, providing excellent opportunities to the batsmen as well as the bowlers. There will be some movement off the seam for the quicker bowlers, especially in the first innings but the pitch does tend to settle down as the game progresses. The ground has pretty short boundaries and we can expect plenty of 4’s and 6's.

The average first innings score here is between 155-160. The weather is expected to be bright and sunny with temperatures remaining below the 20-degree mark.

OV vs CS Betting Tips

With the group stage nearing its business end, there is little separating the two teams at this stage. However, with back-to-back losses, the Central Stags appear a bit deflated at this moment. On the other hand, the Otago Volts have had a dream run during the last few weeks but that has mostly been due to some brilliant performances by a couple of individual players.

Overall, the Stags have a more balanced line-up and we think they will avenge the defeat in the previous game.
