PAK vs NZ Match Prediction - Jan 09, 2023

Pakistan will take on New Zealand in this 3-match ODI series with hopes of getting something positive in their favor. They ended their home season of 8 Test matches without a single win. Their Board has been sacked and replaced, a new selection committee is in charge, and Babar's captaincy is under pressure.

Add to this that New Zealand is the World's top-ranked ODI team at the moment and you will see why the best cricket betting sites are offering competitive odds for both teams right now. Pakistan is a slight favorite but there is not really much to separate the two teams.

Match prediction and cricket betting tips for Pakistan vs New Zealand 1st ODI 2023. The match will be played at the National Stadium, Karachi on the 9th of January 2023.

PAK vs NZ Team Previews

Pakistan

Pakistan has been quite good in white-ball cricket off-late and that is what we must concentrate on. Failures in the red-ball format should not take away that Pakistan has nine wins in its previous ten ODI matches. Babar Azam is at his best in this format is perhaps the best ODI batter in the world right now.

Sure, there are challenges to overcome. Mohammad Rizwan has lost his place in the Test side and he will be under pressure coming into the ODI side as well. Also, Haris Sohail has been recalled to the lineup which could indicate that Pakistan is a bit unsure about their middle-order, however, fitting him into the playing eleven is not going to be easy.

Imam ul Haq, Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam, and Shan Masood seem locked in as the top-4. We worry about Masood at number four because he is not really an attacking batter and if he and Babar bat together for a long time, Pakistan could end up being too conservative for their own good.

The middle/lower order of Mohammad Rizwan, Salman Ali Agha, and Usama Mir is a bit wobbly as well. Rizwan is under pressure while the other two are extremely inexperienced. The bowling lineup will be very strong as Haris Rauf returns to the side alongside Naseem Shah and Mohammad Wasim Jr.

A mix of Salman Ali Agha and maybe Mohammad Nawaz could end up the fifth bowling option.

Fakhar Zaman, Imam-ul-Haq, Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, Haris Sohail, Agha Salman, Mohammad Nawaz, Usama Mir, Mohammad Wasim Jr, Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf.

New Zealand

New Zealand's ODI team is quite dynamic and we think it has all the tools to be successful in Pakistan. The batting lineup is very strong led by Finn Allen, Devon Conway, Kane Williamson at the top, and a strong middle order of Daryl Mitchell, Tom Latham, Glenn Phillips, and Michael Bracewell to follow.

Allen is going to be aggressive at the top while Conway and Williamson will look to bat through the overs. New Zealand certainly has the big-hitting ability to turbocharger their scores toward the end. We rate Glenn Phillips very highly and his batting is going to be key for New Zealand in this series.

In fact, Phillips is a genuine all-rounder with his ability to bowl a few overs and contribute in the field spectacularly.

There is a lot of excitement around Henry Shipley, another tall-strapping fast-bowler from New Zealand that can also swing the ball. He will feature alongside Tim Southee and Lockie Ferguson in an impressive bowling lineup.

PAK vs NZ Toss Prediction

The team that wins the toss is likely to want to bowl first. Karachi almost always has some dew and we think it could come make chasing a lot easier. This is a factor that you must take into consideration while placing your bets.

Pitch and Conditions

There is no rain forecast for match day. A new pitch (not used in the Test Series) is to be used for this match and so that should be hopefully lively and full of runs. There are a lot of runs for batters to be had at the National Stadium. Batters like Imam ul Haq and Babar Azam have grown up on these surfaces and love batting here.

The outfield is fast and offers full value for runs. We think 300 is around par for the venue.

PAK vs NZ Betting Tips

Pakistan is the slight favorite going into this match but we really don't see why we should be paying a higher price for them right now. New Zealand has won 12 out of the previous 14 ODI's against Pakistan. That is not a record that just happens by coincidence. Better fitness standards, an excellent bowling attack, and a more dynamic batting approach have all contributed to New Zealand's dominance over Pakistan.

We like the odds being offered New Zealand and are happy to back them in this match.

Imam ul Haq often gets overlooked because of the brilliance of Babar Azam. He has, however, been one of the rocks of the Pakistani batting lineup. He loves batting in Karachi and has a penchant for making big scores in ODI cricket. We like the Over/Under line and are betting Over 33.5 on him in this one.

The surface at the National Stadium, Karachi is very batting friendly. It allows the batters to play freely and look for massive scores. The boundaries are also not the longest, especially staright, and so a number of sixes could be hit. We think this is one betting market where you can go a bit big.

Phillips is a gun T20 player and has been in great form recently. His naturally aggressive approach and the fact that he normally bats in the death overs give him a license to attack from the start. We think he can hit at least one six even if he stays at the crease for a short duration.
