SYD vs MLS Match Prediction - Dec 26, 2022

It has been just 10 days since the latest season of the Big Bash League started and we have already had plenty of exciting matches. We are looking forward to another such game on Boxing Day, as the Sydney Sixers take on the Melbourne Stars.

Both the teams haven’t been off to the best of starts and are currently in the bottom half of the points table. While these are still early days of the competition, both teams will like to move ahead as soon as possible.

SYD vs MLS Team Previews

Sydney Sixers

The Sixers have been one of the best teams in the league during the last few seasons. They won the title in two consecutive editions and were also the runners-up in the last season. However, they haven’t been off to the best of starts this season, winning each of its two opening matches. The Sixers however manage to win its latest match, played against the Hobart Hurricanes.

Hayden Kerr and Jordan Silk have been pretty solid for the Sixers in the middle order and are two of the highest scorers in the squad. The top-order batsmen seemed to struggle a bit in the opening matches but seem to have struck some form in the last match.

The opening pair of Josh Philippe and Kurtis Patterson put together a 68-run partnership against the Hurricanes and laid the foundation for their victory. Captain Moises Henriques has been dismissed for a golden duck in each of the last two matches, and he will be hoping to get some runs in this match.

The bowling effort of the Sixers has been pretty average too. Sean Abbott is the leading wicket-taker with 6 wickets but the other bowlers seemed to struggle quite a bit. Jonathan Bird and Izharulhaq Naveed have bowled well in patches but lack consistency.

Melbourne Stars

Just like the Sixers, Melbourne Stars have managed to win just one of their first 3 matches, but sit a couple of places higher than them on the points table due to a better NRR.

The Stars’ bowling was taken to the cleaners by the Perth Scorchers in their last match, as the latter put up a massive score of 229. Luke Wood picked up 5 wickets but was pretty expensive, giving away 50 runs from his 4 overs. Wood is currently 3rd on the list of top wicket-takers for this season. Adam Zampa and Nathan Coulter-Nile have picked up 5 wickets each but they too have been quite expensive. Joe Clarke looked in sublime form as he scored the first century of this season in the match against Hobart Hurricanes and led the Stars to a 38-run win.

Beau Webster and Tim Rogers have got some decent starts so far but have failed to convert them into big innings.

SYD vs MLS Toss Prediction

The captain winning the toss is likely to opt to bowl first here.

Pitch and Conditions

The pitch at the SCG is pretty flat and great to bat on. The average first innings score here is around 165 but the teams will be looking to put up a target of closer to 200 to give the bowlers some leeway. However, as the match progresses, we will see the spinners come into action and they will get some turn as the pitch slows down.

The weather is expected to be slightly overcast and humid but there is hardly any chance of rain. The temperature will remain in the mid-20s.

SYD vs MLS Betting Tips

Both the teams have been off to a sedate start this season and will be hoping to win this contest to gain some momentum. While the batting has been pretty similar for both teams, we feel that the bowlers might hold the key here.

The Melbourne Stars hold an upper hand in that regard as they have some quality bowling in the form of Adam Zampa, Trent Boult, and Luke Wood. The odds offered for a home win are shorter but we feel that it might be worth taking a risk by backing the underdogs here.

Bet on the Melbourne Stars to win.

Just 3 matches into the series and Zampa already seems to be in good form. He has picked up 5 wickets so far and the batsmen have often found him difficult to get away with. The pitch at the SCG is known to assist the spinners and Zampa is likely to be quite effective with his wrong one and variations in pace. We are therefore backing him to be the top bowler for the Stars.
