SYD vs SYT Match Prediction - Jan 21, 2023

There’s nothing like a Sydney derby! The Sixers (second place) will face the Thunder (fourth place) in what’s bound to be a tense clash with these city rivals. Both squads have something to play for and neither team will let up in this crucial matchup before the playoffs.

SYD vs SYT Team Previews

Sydney Sixers

The Sixers’ big news is that star spinner, Nathan Lyon, will be out for a few games with a knee injury. There’s still enough bowling talent on the roster, as both Sean Abbott (20 wickets) and Hayden Kerr (14) continue to shine for the side and keep the Sixers in a strong position.

Great batting is certainly taken care of in the Sixers’ squad, as they’ve got three star batsmen to take the team to the next level. Philippe’s 231 runs keep him as the top scorer, although he’s going to have to look out for Patterson (197) and Smith (137), as both are in great form.

Indeed, Smith’s 101 runs against the Strikers was the first and only century ever scored by a Sixers player! As of now, the Sixers appear to be one of the few teams that can actually challenge the Scorchers at the top of the ladder.

Sydney Thunder

The Thunder surprised everyone with a huge win over the Renegades, especially following three losses in a row and the overall form not looking great.

It goes to show just how unpredictable the BBL can be, as Matthew Gilkes’ 74* was the moment of the match. Gilkes has been solid, but fairly unspectacular all season, so to arrive with 74* is quite the statement.

Warner’s 26 is a step in the right direction, but it was shocking to see the top scorer, Oliver Davies, dismissed for a duck! As we said… anything can happen here.

Daniel Sams continues to take wickets and has 16 overall, although his ER of 11.45 was pretty terrible against the Renegades, as he had one wicket but gave up 45 runs. He’s usually better than this, so there’s no massive reason for concern.

SYD vs SYT Toss Prediction

The Sixers are 11-3 against the Thunder when batting second, so they may well decide to bowl first if winning the toss.

Pitch and Conditions

Spinners are often favoured at the SCG pitch, but batters typically make high scores here and as both teams know the ground well, we’re likely to see scores of around 170 or higher.

SYD vs SYT Betting Tips

The odds are quite generous for a Thunder win, but the Sixers are still considered the favourite. It might be tempting to bet on the Thunder because of the odds and the recent win against the Renegades, but come on… this is the Sixers.

With Smith and Abbott handling the batting and bowling, respectively, it seems wise to choose the Sixers in this matchup, even if the Thunder will play hard. The Sixers have won the last three games against the Thunder and have a 15-7 record overall.

Bet on the Sixers to win.
