SYT vs PER Match Prediction - Jan 13, 2023

It’s been a long, hard road for the Thunder since they lost to the Strikers by 124 runs in only their second match (Sydney scored a BBL record-low 15 runs), but the team has bounced back fairly well to fourth on the ladder with 10 points.

The Thunder will face the mighty Scorchers, who remain first on the ladder with 14 points after four wins out of their last five matches. As the current champions from last season, Perth is looking better than ever and Sydney will have quite the challenge on their hands.

SYT vs PER Team Previews

Sydney Thunder

Sydney’s team is going to look somewhat different in the coming weeks, as their top run-scorer, Alex Hales (245), will depart the team to the UAE. It’s a huge blow for a Thunder team that was just beginning to round into form.

Jason Sangha is injured for the entire season and Rilee Rossouw (127 runs) will also depart, but the good news is that top Aussie batsman, David Warner, will bring his big hitting and be able to play the last five matches.

With Warner adding his experience, Oliver Davies (226 runs) providing some great batting, and the addition of up-and-comer Sam Whiteman to the roster (already with 42 runs from his first match), there’s still a lot of good batting here.

The Thunder bowlers are doing fine but need to pick things up a little bit, as Daniel Sams and Nathan McAndrew remain the top bowlers with 11 wickets each.

Perth Scorchers

No du Plessis or Lyth? No problems for Perth! Even with two great batters leaving the squad, Perth is formidable and remains the team to beat. The Scorchers crushed the Heat by eight wickets in their last matchup by scoring 157 runs in 16 overs. Josh Inglis (67 from 35) and Aaron Hardie (65 from 45) were the heroes of the day and kept Perth firmly in the driver’s seat.

Inglis is cruising up the top scorers’ list in the BBL in third place with 313 runs. With Chris Lynn soon to drop out of the league, Inglis has a chance to gain the top spot at season’s end.

The Scorchers’ bowlers also did their job exceedingly well against the Heat, as even with Jhye Richardson out for several weeks due to an injury, Jason Behrendorff stepped up as one of the No. 1 bowlers by taking 3/21. Behrendorff (15 total wickets) and Andrew Tye (17 wickets) are yet another reason as to why Perth is so tough right now.

SYT vs PER Toss Prediction

The Scorchers have been solid when batting second, so they may look to keep this up if winning the toss.

Pitch and Conditions

The Sydney Showground pitch is usually bouncy and suited for pace bowlers. Scores around 150-160 are typical, but the stats show that no team has a major advantage from batting first or second.

SYT vs PER Betting Tips

It’s clear that Perth is the favourite right now, as reflected in the odds, but we’re not sure about this Thunder team just yet. We’d like to see how they perform without Hales and with Warner in the lead role before trusting them.

Although the odds look better for the Thunder, we still think the Scorchers are far too strong with Inglis and Hardie in fantastic form.
