SYTW vs MLSW Match Prediction - Oct 23, 2022

Both squads have gotten out to poor starts to the year via a combination of losing key players because of injuries or switching to other teams.

It might not be the biggest, best matchup of the WBBL calendar, but we still hope for a good contest and exciting cricket action.

SYTW vs MLSW Team Previews

Sydney Thunder Women

The Hurricanes utterly destroyed the Thunder by 49 runs and it never even looked close for a second.

Before they face the Stars, the Thunder surprised everyone by beating the Scorchers by 25 runs! Anything can happen in the WBBL, it seems.

We haven’t been too impressed by batter Tammy Beaumont just yet, likewise with Amy Jones. The rays of hope with regard to putting runs on the board will come from either Phoebe Litchfield or captain Rachel Haynes. Litchfield has posted scores of 25 and 28 runs this year, so there’s optimism she can continue climbing to a half century.

It seems like years ago that the Thunder hoisted the WBBL trophy, but in reality it was only the 2020/21 season! To be fair, the team did lose some of their best players in Smriti Mandhana and Deepti Sharma, as well as coping with bowler Hannah Darlington’s injury that will keep her out a few more games.

Allrounder Sammy-Jo Johnson was stellar back in the 2020/21 season, but has failed to recapture that form. It will be interesting to see if she can pull back some of that great batting and bowling, or if the Thunder need to move on from her.

Melbourne Stars Women

To the shock of everyone, the Melbourne Stars very nearly defeated the Perth Scorchers in their recent matchup.

The Stars batted first and made a pretty average total of 110 runs, but when Perth started to bat, the wickets piled up and up and it looked like Melbourne could pull off the upset. However, Perth rallied just in time and won with only two balls remaining.

That’s got to hurt for the Stars, but the glass-half-full news is that they were potentially minutes away from toppling the best team in the WBBL.

Although opening batter Lauren Winfield-Hill is regarded as the team’s best player, she left the Perth contest with zero runs. Still, that’s unlikely to happen again as she’s far too talented to get two ducks in a row.

A huge surprise came from Tess Flintoff’s 40 runs, as she’s normally a pace bowler and not known for her batting (previous totals this season were 3 and 6 runs, respectively). It’s unlikely she’ll head to the top-order after this, but at least the Stars have some reliability in the lower-order.

The Stars also have a bit of a secret weapon with Annabel Sutherland, who really impressed the league with her 31 runs and 2/20 bowling against Perth. If she can keep up or even improve these figures, then the Stars should cruise past the Thunder.

Pitch and Conditions

Bowlers get a lot of movement and bounce at the WACA, but spinners also manage to see great turn and pick up surprising wickets.

SYTW vs MLSW Betting Tips

It should still be a good match despite the two teams dwelling at the bottom of the WBBL ladder.

The Stars will get the victory as they’re playing marginally better than the Thunder, and we must see a better batting performance from Lauren Winfield-Hill this time around.

Nearly winning against Perth will give the Stars huge amounts of confidence and they’ll surely finish the job versus the Thunder in this matchup. The Thunder have a 9-4 record over the Stars, but the last four games are split 2-2 and much has changed since the glory days of Sydney.

Bet on Melbourne Stars to win.
