WG vs AL Match Prediction - Mar 20, 2023

We have now reached the business end of a truly entertaining season of the Legends League cricket, where the World Giants will look to defend their title against the Asia Lions on Monday at the West End Park International Cricket Stadium in Doha.

This will essentially be the rematch of the finals for the inaugural season, where the World Giants prevailed by 27 runs in a high-scoring encounter. A look at the odds offered by some of the leading cricket betting sites suggests that the Giants hold a slight edge in this match too.

WG vs AL Team Previews

World Giants

The World Giants have been clinical in their performance so far this season as they have lost only 1 of the 4 matches that they played during the group stages. As a result, they ended the stage at the top of the points table and earned a direct entry to their second consecutive finals.

The World Giants have a well-balanced side and most of the team’s players have contributed to their success. The Giants will bank on Hashim Amla and Chris Gayle to give them a solid start here. Amla, who was playing his first match of the season during the Giants’ previous outing, looked in great touch as he scored a half-century.

The Giants have a solid middle order consisting of the likes of Shane Watson, Jacques Kallis, and Morne van Wyk, while the presence of all-rounders Kevin O’Brien, Tino Best, and Samit Patel adds depth to their batting. Chris Mpofu and Tino Best bowled superb spells in the team’s last league match, picking up 3 wickets each to ensure that the Giants finished at the top of the table.

Brett Lee is expected to start here with the new ball, while the presence of Monty Panesar and Ricardo Powell gives the skipper a lot of flexibility to make changes during the middle and death overs.

Asia Lions

After making a strong start to the season, the Asia Lions suffered back-to-back losses and finished second in the points table. As a result, they had to face the India Maharajas in an Eliminator on Saturday. However, the Lions brought up their A-game as they sailed through by a whopping 85 runs.

After opting to bat first, the Lions got a good start from Tillakaratne Dilshan and Upul Tharanga, who put up an opening stand of 83 runs in under 9 overs to set the stage for a big total. Tharanga went on to score his second half-century of the season and is now the second-highest run-getter behind Gautam Gambhir.

In addition to Tharanga, Dilshan, and Misbah ul-Haq are in good form too and the Lions will be banking on them to play yet another good inning here. However, the middle order hasn’t been in the best of form this season and their performance has been a hit or a miss.

The likes of Shahid Afridi, Asghar Afghan, and Thisara Perera haven’t put up a big score despite getting some good starts. Sohail Tanvir has been superb with the new ball as well as in the death and is the leading wicket-taker in the tournament with 7 wickets.

Abdur Razzak and Mohammad Hafeez picked up 2 wickets each in the Eliminator and the Lions will be hoping that they will put up a similar performance here. The presence of all-rounders including Abdul Razzaq and Perera gives skipper Shahid Afridi greater flexibility to make bowling changes in the middle overs.

WG vs AL Toss Prediction

5 of the 7 matches played in this tournament have been won by teams batting first. We, therefore, think that the winner of the toss will opt to bat first.

Pitch and Conditions

As the West End Stadium has hosted 7 matches in the past 9 days, the surface has developed some rough spots which can be exploited by the slower bowlers. The quicker bowlers too can expect some movement off the seam, while the batsmen will enjoy the consistent bounce. In short, the pitch is well-balanced, providing help to batsmen as well as the bowlers.

The average first-inning score here is around 150-160 runs. The weather will be clear with a temperature of around 25 degrees Celsius.

WG vs AL Betting Tips

Both teams have played well and as a result, have managed to make it to the finals for the second consecutive season. However, we think that the World Giants hold an edge here as they have been almost flawless in their performance so far. The team has some powerful hitters as well as batsmen who can stabilize the innings. The team also has plenty of all-rounders and a formidable bowling attack, which can be difficult to crack especially in a high-pressure situation.

Bet on the World Giants to win.

Tillakaratne Dilshan is in excellent form for the Asia Lions and has given the team some good starts. He has scored a total of 133 runs at an average of 33.25. In his 5 innings so far, he has failed to score over 20.5 runs on just one occasion. Therefore, looking at his consistency, we are backing him to once again score over 20.5 runs in this match.
